can i run (4) 10's like this?
hi guys. my brother will run (4) 10" subs in a hatchback and we are in the process of building a couple of designs. one is a sealed. now, before , he had only 2 facing the rear taillights and they sounded great! so we want to kinda leave those in that position. since we cant fit 4 across so all 4 can face the rear, we were thinking, instead of facing ALL 4 up towards the rear hatch glass, could we just leave 2 facing the rear, as in the past, and then put the other 2 facing the front (back seats) ????
then when you either open the rear hatch OR fold down the rear seats, you'll have a glimpse of 2 subs . the design would just seem to be a big rectangle with all of the subs in their own chambers inside the box. on top, the amps could be placed, since it will just be a flat carpeted one-soild piece top. each pair of subs will be on one amp. i heard about cancellation issues, like that i shouldnt face 2 subs towards the rear and two straight up, coz that would cause a 90 degree angle which i heard is not good to do. i know many people will say , fire all 4 straight up, but how about this way my original idea???
thx

Yeah, you might have phase/cancellation problems. I Have the same effect in one of my cars...the bass is much louder and cleaner when facing the rear...so I decided to go with 3x12" subs instead of 2x10" subs facing the front instead of the rear to offset the output difference and still give me trunk space. It worked very well, as the bass is louder and cleaner than before and I still have most of my trunk.

^^No, I had 2x10's facing the rear, which produced a lot of bass, much more than facing the front, but the enclosure took up too much room in the usable portion of the trunk. I wanted to put 4x10's facing the front(inside the car), as this would have been cheaper, but they would not fit neatly as I had not the width to do it properly. I then decided (after much WINISD testing and measuring) to go with 3x12" subs facing the front. As it turned out, this was a very good decision as the sound is excellent and more than loud enough. I ended up selling the box with the 2x10's. Oh, and I have most of my trunk to use.
I had considered putting 2 subs firing upwards in addition to the 2 firing to the rear, but I decided against it as I was worried about excessive vibration on the package shelf( and distortion of the rear 6x9 speakers located there) as well as possible cancellation problems
due to path length difference( even though it was very small amount)and also cosmetics. The current set up is nice to look at when you fold down the rear seat, you see 3 big 12s right across the opening firing all their energy directly into the cab. The only negative was the port(large slot type)was unable to placed in the front along with the subs. It was placed at the side which seems to be fine.
Hope that helps you a little bit.
