^ severe clipping can cause excess heat provided your amp has the extra current on hand... but unless its grossly distorted and your amp can deliver gobs of power its not really an issue... IMO...

Sorry SQL.. maybe I jumped the gun on you..

Or a lack of power... running too small of an amplifier can also cause a problem as you are pushing it harder causing it to clip...

If your amplifier has 'issues' and goes straight DC...

Depending on the woofer and situation you can usually get an idea of what happened just by looking at the coil itself if you know what you're looking for.

^ thats not really true...

A solid amp will put out about %20 more power then its rated for continuously at nominal load.. thats all you'll get... if your rating is dynamic then thats also about all you will get....

now, look at the duty cycle of even heavily clipped music.. it might go up one percent... so if your amp can deliver 1000wrms max. you are probably looking between 110-260w with normal music, on average... compaired to 100-250... not a big diff...

If your amp is putting out DC its because you've blown an output and its stuck closed.. dosen't happen to often, but I've heard of it happening none the less...

It is also a misconception that you can tell the difference between a voice coil that was burnt with clean power VS distorted power...

I was also speaking about the people out there that buy an amp and sub package and are working on a budget and end up getting something that doesn't go as loud as they want... entry level sub with a small amp... so they end up pinning the gain and then turn the bass boost not only on the deck but the amp as well... and then turn the loud on the deck on as well. All that distortion will take out a woofer.

As for blowing an output on an amplifier... yes, it does happen and that will fry a voice coil.

I wouldn't say it's a misconception about being able to read a voice coil. The way it burns, the pattern, where, etc all will give a good idea of what happened... It's not an exact science but it is fairly easy to tell what is and what is not warranty.

Any number of reasons, but reason number 1 would be stupid people.

Either way, it all amounts to giving the speaker more power than it can take, thermally. Every speaker has thermal limits, and pushing it consistently past those limits will burn the coil.

Condom, it might happen if the amp/sub were close in output vs powerhandeling... then some heavy distortion might send it over the edge... but a bigger amp/more power is not going to be the solution...

If the sub in your example blew, it was going to happen anyway.. maybe the next time he listened to his car stereo a little longer then normal...

Can you explain to me how you can tell if a coil has been burt with clean power vs distorted power... cause that seems wakk to me

^ Colouration of the voice coil will change. I have seen voice coils that are tiger stripped.

the coil will discolour differant ways depending on how it happens.

dont have the patience to go indepth,,, Maybe the condom man can add.
