Cerwin Vega vmax 12
What's your budget, amp, how much space is available, and what do you listen to?
I'm not sure if it was a stroker or a vmax 12" I heard in a Grand AM, it was in a ported bassworx box, 600w amp, port & sub facing the rear. It sounded great and got loud but it would have been better with a custom box and other stuff like deadening. There are probably better subs out now, I think the vmax is 4 years old? It's a good buy if it's new & cheap.
If JBL's Power series (400w) is anything like their GTI series than it's a good buy. I read it was comparable in sound to a JL W3.
Type-Rs are cheap & decent depending on the generation. Some people like me don't like the cheap/flat sound and others don't notice it. Atleast the 3rd-generation is cheap at $100 each. The 2010/4th-generation drivers look sweet, it's too bad they didn't upgrade the 15" too. They also have a new 600w slim 10" & 12" that are "as loud as a normal-depth 4th-gen Type-R", which makes me wonder why they have normal-depth ones too. There has to be a loss somewhere or they'd all be slim.
Go with whatever is cheaper and spend the rest on deadening and a custom box. If they aren't a big difference in price I'd choose: 4th-gen Alpine (new/expensive), Cerwin, 3rd-gen Alpine, then JBL.
Also checkout the SSA Dcon 12", 300w, 89db efficiency, so technically it should be as loud as a 600w 12" with 86db efficiency. They can apparently handle 500w in a ported box.

I remember way back in the day...c.1988 playing with a set of Vega's. They were excellent subs then and extremely efficient in a time of efficient subwoofers. Not familiar with the current ones, but I notice they aren't nearly as efficient as the older ones at least in the specs. If they sound as good though, I'd definitely use them!
are they the new vmaxs? mine were from a few years ago and had the thick red surround and silver cone face, then the next year they were changed to black surround and got beefed up. I think last year or this year they were released again but got a complete makeover. the new ones I think are all black. should be 500 watts rms but if they're anything like the old ones they're a wicked sub
