Hey, I am running a cheap set of Clarion 6.5" mids and tweets, the blue cone ones. They are being run off the front channels of my old RF amp, 160x4 (40x4 rms). I have the HPF on my deck set to 80hz, overall the system sounds pretty decent with a sub running. But on some bass heavy music, they play cleaner with the HPF set to 120hz. I wanted to know where do most people usually high-pass their mids at? I know every mid is different, I tried a 60hz HP crossover card in my amp, the speakers did not seem to like playing that low. Any one have some ideas on shallow mount 6.5's that will play a bit lower? Thanks!

The crossover point will vary depending on the sub and mid in question.
I actually like the sound with mine crossed over that high. Both drivers give me overlap in the 60 to 150 Hz region for a little more grunt in the bass.
BUT the BIG downside of a high crossover like that is the fact that over ~100 Hz bass is directional and in SQ you want all the sound to appear from the front of your ride. So depending on the capabilities of the mid-bass try to crossover at 90 Hz or so.

As far as shallow drivers go I would check out Crutchfied, they have the wide product selection, database, and customer support you might need. But a 6.5 can only do so much... it is a good size to fit in a vehicle but I am afraid without an enclosure and the highish SPLs you will probably ask for they will disapoint.

Why not slam in a nice thin 8" Aliante in your door and its good up to 300 Hz....hehehehe evil laugh.

Thanks for the help, JohnVroom. I am running a Kicker Comp 12", lowpassed at 70hz. Sounds good. Down the road maybe I will build my doors out, and do a nice 7 or 8" driver.

I have my amp that runs my seperates running with the High Pass on (x-over on amp), and my deck set with the high pass through, try that, see if it helps

If there is anyway for you to get the 6.5s in a sealed enclouser they will sound better at lower x-over points, if they are in sealed enclousers and they sound muffled try a larger enclouser.

Thanks guys. The 6.5's are running wwithout an enclosure, they use the door as the box. It is a shallow door, have to see what I can figure out.

Have you sound deadened the doors? You will notice a big difference in the low end of your mid if you perform this.
