Criticizing

opinions are why people post here. opinions are given and either replied to or not, negative or positive. when you choose to post here, you are setting yourself up for dorks to come along and try to get under your skin. it does always seem that the negative ones come from guys who likley have no skill or ability(or are not willing to show it for some reason) i will relpy to most posts, if i start a thread, its my responsibilty, isnt it. like dwvw and tim said, put up or shut up. i do respect the work and abilities of guys like dwvw, and never said anything to the contrary, and the disagreeing is most of the time fun. there are only a couple of people here that i wouldnt give the time of day to, but i respect their abilities and would never blatantly hack there skills as installers, as people maybe, but not their skills
Well I suppose the more you put yourself in the spotlight, the more you expose yourself to criticism. Rightfully so I'd say. You want the glory, gotta take the rest of it that goes along with it too. If a noob does his first install and does a nice job but maybe has some areas to improve on then giving some praise and some helpful hints or ideas doesn't hurt. If seasoned pro showcases an install and it's good but also has visible flaws, he'll still get lots of kudos for it but should be able to listen to what people see as the flaws are too. People who want to be at an elevated level of 'fame' also should expect to receive an elevated level of scruitiny. Presenting it though in a respectful way of course is always best.
Critics are as old as time. As long as your customer and you are happy with the project that's all that matters. A public board is there for opinions and discussion, but I personally would never give any weight to any comment that I felt was not constructive.
Based on the previous installs posted by Defro(the corvette, the ongoing Neon and this Celica), I have to give the man and all involved much kudos.

if the kid down the street who spends all his time on the computer looking at projects doesn't like it, too bad for him. make a nice clean install that you're happy with and the customer is ecstatic about, it's their business you're wanting to keep.
i personally go bananas when you take a normal thread, with actual points listed and almost a formal discussion regarding some audio theory or install, and then all of a sudden it turns into some mud slinging fest of incredible immaturity. ruins a good debate in my opinion.

Hey Randy - WTF is wrong with carpet???
lol
Seriously though. People hate. It's what they do. Unfortunately I find that in this hobby the more into it people are the more critical they become. Hang out with a group of installers (pro or enthusiast) at a car show - as they move from car to car they will point out interesting things and offer some praise but inevitably they will point out every single flaw. Whether it is mentally or vocally to rip on the job is a matter of tact...
Take the Celica (just cuz it's the topic lately)- it's an excellent job overall. Sure one can point out this or bark about that but seriously, it's a nice install that should sound excellent.
I'm sure with my 'fan club' I will get all sorts of 'kind' comments when I post pictures but that's alright - I will build what I build and that's that.
Have fun people.

This post reminds me of something posted about a year and a half ago (forgive me if my timeline is off). An installer who had never attempted to fiberglass an enclosure before mocked one up and posted pictures of it on this board. He asked for input -- what he received was put downs -- I cannot recall his name or if he posted again.
I think expressing opinions is important, but expressing negativity is not. I find it interesting that alot of negativity is by faceless lurkers as well. You ever notice how many of the regulars on the board use their real name or at least everyone knows who they are, but the "Keyboard Commandos" hide behind their identities like a bully behind Mommy's skirt?

I haven't spent too much time on this particular board, but since i found out there actually was a Canadian board i have been on it more. One thing i noticed is the differences between boards on the net. Some boards with a sh1tload of members can get pretty negative. I have been a member on Sound Domain for a long time (i didn't know about this board at the time)and it can get to be a flamefest pretty quick (especially if u dont own an avalanche lol). I haven't seen enough to judge this board but there does seem to be alot of ripping on anyone who posts pics of work. Personally i dont mind suggesting someone do something different but its all in how u say it. I believe someone said something earlier about "tact". Thats where the problems all lie. in how things are suggested.
