I have a cda 9855. When i first put it in the faceplate would stick in the tilt sometimes. Before i ripped it out i went to talk to an "authorized alpine service center". They told me most of the warranty issues are installer problems. Its easy to squish the din mount case and that prevents the tilt mechanisim from working. So, i took it out myself and sure enough, he was right!! It worked fine when not in the case. So i straighten the case out, put it back in the mount making sure it wasn't twisted or bent and the tilt has worked perfect ever since.
My friend rick has a 3 yr old alpine i installed for him in his truck and has never had a problem.

Used my Alpine 7894 for about 5 or 6 years...didn't use the tilt functions much, but still had to motorize to put in cd's...

I've now moved onto the iva-w200 which is still treating me well.

while that might be true, my alpine 9853 had the issue of rollers and gear wheel fixed. that's a known problem in that series. and the problem wasn't going away if i held it in the air with no mounting.
it can't be user error, too many cases.
I hope Alpine never ever again does the same stupid thing they did with 9853/55 series.

Well, all three of the issues I have had with Eclipse were taken care of so I am not complaining about their service. I just wondered if I was having bad luck or not? If it seemed the Alpine units were more reliable I was going to pick this one up and sell the Eclipse when it came back, but it seems from the replies of members they are very similar for failure rates.
I thank all the members that took the time to reply and would really appreciate to here from others on this topic.

the more moving parts the greater chance for error
my alpine had to have the ribbon cable (attaches from the unit to the faceplate ) replaced after one year

Kenwoods are notorious for ribbon cables
