what's the difference between the 2? i'm leaning towards the AVH-P6500DVD just because i can get it cheaper. i've been reading reviews and the only thing people hate is that you can't play mp3s from a dvd. is there anything else i should watch out for? also is it true that the dvd player will only work when the car is parked?

it can be hooked up so you can view it while driving....... it's kind of illegal, not to mention dangerous, to do that. What some players do is go into screen saver mode while you drive. The screen off wire is usually hooked up to the hand brake. You can put it on a separate switch if you prefer.

Yep, the 6600 is just the newer model. Same as the 6500 though with just some different background programming mainly.

Grounding the parking brake wire will allow the unit to work the same whether parked or moving although I highly advise you don't. I don't want you running into my family/friends because you were distracted by the screen.

There are only three difference between the AVH-P6500DVD vs. AVH-P6600DVD:

Model year: 2003 vs. 2004
Graphical interface: NO vs. YES
WMA playback: NO vs. YES

Hope this helps.

It only illegal to watch TV while driving if it effects your driving... same deal if you are stuffing a cheeseburger into your face or fumbling for a CD or something, and it causes you to make an illigal or dangerous manover...

I can see why alot of shops wont bypass this function... but I think you should be able to sign a waver saying you wont sue them because you are an idiot.....

I imagine an indash screen that can play while driving might be nice for your passangers... especially kids.... or in those damn traffic jams driving thorugh TO...

From my understanding it is illegal to have a movie/tv/etc playing in sight of the driver while the vehicle is in motion. Correct me if I'm wrong but that is why the manufacturers put in the parking brake wire so that it will only play when the brake is on. That was their way of getting around the legalities of having the in dash monitors.

Any screen that is visible to the driver, and is in use (ie movie) while driving is illegal.
It does not matter if the driver is looking at it, but if they can see it (ie in the dash) then it's illegal.
Look it up in the HTA

Im going to have to disagree, although maybe I should look it up... Iam sure if I did Id see nothing buy grey...

While Iam sure you can be charged for watching a screen while driving... Ive never heard that having a functional screen in your dash is against the law anywhere.

Even in areas where cell phone use while driving is prohibited, you can still have the phone in the car with you, and passangers can still use it...

The general guidlines as I see them are that if a cop sees you driving in a dangerous manner, or if you are doing so and cause an accident... you will be charged with dangerous driving !

This goes for playing with anything...

Think of the law this way.. if screens are illegal then any car stereo with a display that functions while the car is engaged should also be illegal... now that sure sounds funny dosent it...

(although if a cop sees you playing with it while driving and feels it was a major distraction then you can be charged)

If you ever found yourself in a situation where the screen was playing and cop said you were letting it destract you... then youd have to plead it with the judge....

Might be more difficult to say you werent watching it and it was just on if no one else was in the car with you.... cause there wouldnt be a reason for it to be on....

I have heard of people getting charged for having neon tubes or stobes going at night.. ovbiously its the cops/judges discretion...

In other words there are no hard and fast laws.. My opinion is that if you feel your driving is fine with a screen on, then chances are you will never run into a problem.....

So basically how I read that is it's a lot like speeding... it's only illegal if you get caught?

I had the side mirrors with blue LEDs that lit when my parking lights were on, made the car stand out... never had problems for months... drove next to police officers, they looked at the car, didn't say a word, then one night on the way home from my girl friends... $81 fine...

All depends on the mood of the officer on that day. As you said, a lot of laws are open to interpritation.

If you want to chance an accident because you were caught up watching a movie, or you want to chance a ticket for driving without due care and attention, or dangerous driving or having your car towed/impounded because it's set up so you can't drive without it being able to play (unless they confiscate the face plate).... Then go a head... I just hope that you don't hit me or any of my friends or family.

Those that know me... I am changing my view on screens and am starting to see the light.
