DIY AUX input

so i have a homemade AUX input adapter thing for my pioneer deck and for some reason its really quite when using the AUX input..... for example i have the volume **** set to 40 for CDs and radio and its damn loud and to get teh same output while using my MP3 player and AUX input i have to have the **** set to 60

is this common for DIY cables or is there a chance something was done wrong? also i know its not the MP3 player as i used teh same one with my alpine deck and alpine AUX input adapter and it worked perfectly fine
