Do I really need a line driver?

This is a good question. I'm running a clarion deck with 4V pre outs. I also have a PLD-1 that is not installed. Should I put it in or is it just a wast of space? How do you know if you need to use a line driver? I'm running the new alpine v12 amp if that makes a difference.

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER
4V PEAK = 2.7 V RMS.
2.7 V RMS @ 1000 OHMS OUTPUT IMPEDANCE = SQUAT
1.5 V @ 100 OHMS WILL HAVE MORE USEABLE AMPLIFIER DRIVING CAPABILITY.

ECLIPSE AND NAKAMICHI DECKS PUT MOST OTHERS ON THE TRAILER FOR HIGH VOLTAGE LOW IMPEDANCE APPLICATIONS, AS WELL AS PROVIDING BETTER SOUND QUALITY.

IN COMPETITION WE USE US AMPS DRIVEN BY A NAKAMICHI 4 V RMS DECK. THE GAIN ON THE AMPS ARE VIRTUALLY OFF. WE RUN 4 OF THEM OFF 1 RCA, NOT BOTH. NO PROBLEM GETTING THE AMPS TO THE TOP OF THEIR GAME.
ALSO, WHEN YOU DROP THE HAMMER ON YOUR SYSTEM, AND YOUR CARS VOLTAGE DROPS TO 11.8 VOLTS OR THEREABOUTS, SO DOES YOUR DECK'S, SO IT'S OUTPUT CAN BE REDUCED FURTHER.

LINE DRIVERS INTRODUCE ANOTHER SIGNAL PROCESSING ITEM IN THE CHAIN SO IT IS IMPOSSIBLE THAT THEY DON'T DEGRADE THE SIGNAL QUALITY. AMPLIFYING A WEAK OUTPUT SIGNAL FROM A DECK ALSO AMPLIFIES THE NOISE FLOOR. = WASTED POWER.

A BETTER DECK IS WHAT WE ALL NEED.

here is another thing to consider. i took a multemeter to my rca outs and they reash upto 4.5v so i dont know about 2.7v rms. the amps peak at about 2.4v. also my deck doesnt drop output voltage with the overall battery voltage drop at all, done the test many times to see it.

where u get your numbers from? what equations?

Why don't you use the LD. It's not like it'll hurt.

Good chance the numbers are measured on a SPL meter like the Audio Control sa-3055, this is just one of the functions of this machine that can tell us dealers about the real capabilities of equipment. Another thing to point out on the voltage is the clipped vs. non-clipped outputs or in other words will the cd plyers rca pre-outs actually distort or not, another of the anyone vs. Eclipse / Nakamichi / Denon scenarios. You might take your meter to the rca pre-out and measure 4.5v but you don't know if they are clipped or not, the only way to verify this is to have a really good ear and pockets of knowledge to back it up or a meter/oscilloscope to verify a clipped signal.

a good ear wont help me really since its pure spl and its massive distortion any way with the amps xovers at full till. i do got an spl meter tho but all it will tell is that without the LD i would just have to turn up the volume on the deck abit higher to achive the same line output.

With 2.2 volt preout I gained .9 db with a 9 volt Ld like yours but mine was a crossfire cfq5.2

I can tell you my results with my 4volt preouts and my new RW audio in a few months.

I din't know you were talking about strickly SPL.
