I seen an audiobahn alum 12n for sale (specs here Audiobahn ALUM12N 12" Aluminum Cone Dual 6 ohm Car Subwoofer ) and its a dual 6 ohm sub ,never knew there was a dual 6 ohm but what i want to know is if I connect it to an ma audio hk 797 how much power will the sub see

 

Wire it in parallel and you'll see somewhere between 200-300wrms with that amp

 

so how powerful of an amp would i need to run the sub at 1000rms

 

youd need an amp that puts out about 1200 at 2 ohm and 800 rms at 4 ohms so when you wire it to 3 ohms it will still be stable and put out the 1000 ish rms you want

 

or if you get a JL audio or the new alpine pdx amps they are supposed to put out the same power at all configurations so get a 1000/1 or 1.1000 and it should power it nicely

 

Explain why someone would run a 6ohm sub ... please.

 

because thats the only way the manufacture sells them?

back in the day, many JL subs were dual 6 ohm...

JBL gti are dual 6ohm, but I had no issues running it with a high quality amp rated at 4ohms (subs wired to 3ohm parallel), I've since changed the amp to a 2 0hm stable model with more power. Remember impedance is not a rock solid value, it changes quite drastically while playing and good qulaity amps usually have no problem with this variance. If you're worried, just make sure you get a 2ohm stable amp that's about 1.3-1.5x the rms value of the sub to ensure it's fully powered. As to why run a 6ohm sub...it's the best sounding sub I've heard to date!
