from any review I've read I'd have to say both are great subs ...... I value dave's opinion as he has had an oportunity to listen to a lot more woofers than most of us so I'd go with the Ed12a ...........
too bad they're not making it anymore ......... so unless you're going used you'll have to go ID

Send me the new one, I'd be more than happy to test it.
I am really impressed with the performance of the eD drivers, really impressed. We A/B'ed them against some other woofers that are considered 'state of the art' (no reference to PPI intended) and they smoked them in terms of accuracy. I am going to be running the e12a in my car and an e10o in my wife's Rav.

currently, I'm leaning towards the IDmax... since the same sub will be available for a while, and I won't have to worry about having to redesign, because the sub I had is no longer available.

No real gain for it being flat. The benifit of that panel is that it is extremely rigid as compared to 'most' cones. That's all.
Lightning Audio is using a cone-shaped honeycomb core piston on their new Storm woofers use them and they are quite impressive, though the Honeycomb driver was designed as an SPL specific unit, the Aluminum fares quite well as an SQ driver when used with the Neo magnet.
