eclipse vs denford...
#1
i know this won't be much of a comparison for most of you... but im considering switching up decks... im debating between my eclipse 5506 & denon/rockford fosgate on sounddomain...
both have copper plated chassis, eclipse with 8v preout and denon with 4v preouts but has 8v balanced preouts, eclipse with bass/mid/treble control and denon with only bass & treble (both centered at identical frequencies)... thats as far as it goes for features...
i kinda like the mid control since i do have it at +1... also how would i use the balanced lines out with an xtant amp (since the xtant is rated for 10-17v balanced line-ins)? how do i run it/use them? im unfamiliar with how a true balanced preout works...
is it worth switching up? will i notice a difference in quality/SQ?
also... ill have to spend a little bit of money to switch up but not that much... so money is kinda irrelevant to this comparison...
thanks

I don't see a point to doing it. You won't notice any audible difference in SQ (This marketing voodoo about HU's is giving me a headache). If you crave change that badly, go ahead. Otherwise, it's just a hassle that you will so no benefit from.

Assuming you are not getting any audible noise induced into your RCA cables, a balanced signal will not really make much of a difference. It can be beneficial if you are running long cable lengths or perhaps lower quality/untwisted RCA cables.
I could be incorrect in assuming this, however since the two signal conductors carry signals 180 degrees out of phase, the peak to peak output voltage is effectively doubled as well, I believe this is why balanced outputs usually have double the higher voltage outputs.
Another thing to keep in mind is that balanced RCAs are not true balanced cables. A true balanced setup requires three conductors, two signal paths and a ground.
I would not base your buying decision on balanced outputs, but if you like the other avaliable features and can utilize them, why not
George is correct, many Xtant amps need balanced line modules to utilize this type of output. I know the 603x/604x amps have the capability built in. I think the 403a does as well, but I'm not sure..
I have an AC 4.1i that I'm debating on using to provide a higher voltage balanced signal to my Xtant 603x. I may try to go unbalanced from my nakamichi cd-400 (around 3V RMS), and then see what sort of difference balanced, higher voltage outs would make. I'll post my findings when I get around to it. (Hope the weather gets nicer soon)

yeah i have the xtant 403a... it has the capabilities built-in... but would it be bad running a lower voltage that the range it was intended for? can i use the same rcas?
i have no problems with noise...
only reason im considering... just because i can i guess... its pretty much not going to cost anything, my deck is about 4-5 yrs old and it would be nice to have a newer deck, theres a lot of sq hype about the denon, and i wouldnt be trading much feature wise between the 2...
also... both deck are very simplistic with minimal functions (only useful ones)...
does the denon have a sub control (volume and phase), play cd-rs & rws, and read cd-text?
thanks

SQ hype regarding the Denon is just that - hype. The Z1 will sound the same as the Denford as a Nak as most any other featureless unit. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. There are many older HU that people would love to have, Alpine units, C910/C90.

^ Sorry that is incorrect and you should know every manufacturer can change the sound of their products. Bob Carver proved this with his null-testing in a public forum. Products measure differently and audibly so, but in an ABX the differences (which are usually very small) are not easy to point out (don’t know why ). Sorry but it is true, it isn’t voodoo it is electrical engineering. The question is: is the difference worth the price?
