Enclosure problem

Hey guys so ive got a dodge ram quad cab and have managed to find enough space to fit some alpine type x woofers under the back seats. Only problem is i had to take the bottom of the prefab box and fiberglass it back together because the subs are so big. Now they are sealed up and within the reccomended airspace of .7 to 1 cuft. howver they still sound horrible just a distorted thump i dont have the gains high at all im really starting to think its the enclosure thats causing problems.

How did the subs sound prior to the surgery? Assuming they worked well in the box before it was modified with the same amp and settings,...that leaves the enclosure as only thing that was changed. It's probably not sealed properly or leaks under pressure from the sub playing.

... however they still...
Do you know what a sealed box is supposed to sound like? Did they sound bad before? Even if the box wasn't sealed properly, it shouldn't be all out distorted, right? I once put a CVR15 in a kitchen cabinet with nails, and it wasn't horribly distorted.

they sounded about the same the problem i thought was seeing i cut the bottom off there was air just leaving the box in all directions not focused .. i mean the woofer was moving fine and polarity was correct so i mean im stumped it could be amplifier problems ..i have it wired at 2 ohms and the pdx amp i heard isnt too stable so my next option i wiring it at 8 ohms but that shouldnt change the sound quality. im goin to get out my volt meter and check if i have 12 v from power to ground i suppose that could be a problem just not getting the voltage.

Wait... Are you saying you cut the back of the box off and ran them with the back of the box wide open? Free-air? If that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised if those woofers are near smoked. Is it a factory head unit you are using?

Was it in a crappy ported or sealed (which?) box? Alpine makes good amps, and the PDX1000.1 puts out 1000W at either 2 or 4 ohms. Don't wire it into 8 ohms, wire it into 1 or 2. Your subs might be blown, but if they both sound the same, and the sound didn't change going to sealed than it's most likely an air leak. Did you feel around the box for air?

it was a sealed box ... im thinking theres a small air leak ...and there is no way my subs are smoked theyve been used for an hour tops cause they sound like *** ... do u suggest i lay a few more layers of fiberglass until im positive its air tight. and i have an kenwood head unit.

you can kill a sub in minutes. I've never free-aired a sub to death but I'm sure it could happen in an hour if done right

If you have an air leak in a sealed box, it will sound like crap... a small hole does not make it a ported box

OP, can you post a few pictures of the box? Maybe we can get a better look at it and see what's going on.
