Enclosure space question.

Enclosure space question.
Hey,
I recently got two new subs and am putting them into boxes with 0.85 cu.ft. of space each. The manufacturer specs say to use 1.0 - 4.6 cu.ft. Will running these subs in a smaller volume do any harmful mechanical damage to the subs? If not what would be the pros (if any)/cons to a smaller volume?
I do have these boxes in my car trunk right now, but in the not so far future i'll be getting a truck and have to fit them under the rear seat so i'm not so willing to get a larger box right now.

oh kicker you say thats all I have used for the past 5 years ya that box is to small you should really go to a 2 cube per box ported with a round or slot port about 3x11x 12to18 deep for tuning start at 18 and cut down in half inch incriments.

I know that it's too small for the potential of the subs, but I can't buy a larger box for them until I know what truck i'm gonna buy. Then i'll get a customized double box to span under the entire rear seat and have enough volume.
I was just wondering if running them in a small enclosure would be harmful for awhile, only a couple of months.
Also, on the topic, i think i might just stick with sealed boxes for the time being. I have no experience in tuning boxes at all and from what i've read, a mistuned ported box could destroy your subs, or at least produce very bad sq. If anyone has really good tutorial, I might try building a box for them and tuning it.

I have run subs in enclosures that were to small before and as mentioned, the sound reproduction was not as pleasing. Now to answer your question, I believe that a .85 cu ft enclosure will not cause damage to your sub. The more input, the merrier.

On the subject of volume, from what I understand, in a sealed box the larger size of the recommended volume would produce the best sq. In a ported box, what volume would produce the best sq, while still maintaining a pretty good pound?
Kicker specs:
Sealed 1.0 - 4.6 ft.cu.
Ported 1.75 - 2.25 ft.cu.
I'm looking for the most bass while keeping the best sq. Where do you draw the line between the two?

From my general understanding, the larger the box, the deeper the bass and, IMO, the greater the output. The smaller the box, the tighter and more clean sounding the bass will sound. If you are looking for a mix of mass bass and sq, then I would recommend going somewhere in the middle of the enclosure volume recommendations. I apologize for the general answer, but I don't have experience with these specific subs.
