fiber glass finishing
#1
i have my amp racks done and now i want to coat them with that bondo stuff and eventually paint them. i wanted to know if there is some concoction that i could make instead of straight bondo. also what sort of finishings can i do for these racks ? i really REALLY wanted to do that shiny bright paint. kinda like new car paint. what those red explode cones look like. whats that sort of paint job called ?

Mix a little fibreglass resin in with the bondo. But at the end of the day, it's all about elbow horsepower and sanding. A lot of people are roughing pieces together, getting most of the sanding done and then farming it out to a body shop. That way you can pretty much be garantteed that it will turn out like you want. If you go that way, check out a few places first and get some estimates. Also, the cheapest place isn't always the best. Check out their work. Best thing is if you get a recommendation from someone that has used some place and been very satisfied.

A few coats of high fill primer helps fill in sanding scratches and very small imperfections - basically makes it WAY easier to get totally smooth for paint.
I agree with the comment about letting a pro do the final finish though. Most shops out here will only charge $150-250 for something like an amprack or baffle.

body filler + resin = hard to sand
use sanding putty. its creamier, sets better and sands easier. also called pirranah putty
then spray with high build poly primer.
sand with 600 by hand or 400 by random orbital buffer
give to body shop to spray one last time with poly primer and then let them paint.
