I agree with Ty - I like the smell and literally used to keep some in my car as an air freshener. My kids and wife like the smell too now

Once again I am resin ignorant so this is from some resin designers. They work exclusively with Epoxy resin though (better properties for our applications).
I am afraid you are SOL (Sorry Out of Luck). The smell is the smell, if you want a milder or non smelling resin go to Epoxy resins. The smell shouldn’t make peoples eyes burn (it’s a simple aromatic) but I suppose some are scent sensitive. I do not know what the bucket of water is supposed to do but they consider it a wives tale but they are willing to try it and see. The only reason it could have value is that polyester resin absorbs water to a point. BTW every brand of resin is a little bit different with different additives to make it opaque, fire retardant, white, etc.
Below is long winded resinspeak:
Why do we use polyester resin: 1) it is the cheapest resin 2) thicker than epoxy so it won’t run while forming complex shapes, 3) known 7% shrinkage as it cures 4) cures stiff and can be worked into a shine
Why do we use vinyl ester resin: 1)Sets quickly like polyester 2) wets the fiber better than polyester, 3)better heat performance, 4)much stronger than polyester 5) chemical resistance 6) 15-87% more expensive than polyester
Why do we use Epoxy resin: 1) strength from average to the best 2) superior temperature performance 3) Easiest to wet the fiber 4) very chemical resistant (except to strong oxidizers) 5) Best elongation of all resins (takes more wear and tear before it delaminates from the fiber) 6) best for working with carbon fiber and Kevlar as far as matching strengths 7) very expensive to flaming expensive.

. I never add more than about 2.5%. Sometimes you just gotta wait...
