I thought I would throw my 2 cents in here since my name got thrown around a few times...............

First off, building something for the sake of building it and learning is never a bad thing..............better to learn for free then at the customers expense.................

When someone asks for comments on something that he is relativly new at, they should probably be given in an advice kinda way........not a brutally honest "bashing"..................otherwise the message is usually going to be lost.............all that will happen is and no one learns that way................

Being new to fiberglassing there is always errors made, poor design and construction but people should be a little more forgiving when some one "puts" themselves out there..........

I can tell you this about myself....................the silver civic that we did for MTX with the red painted trunk...........that was the first time I ever did something like that...............and that was..........2 years ago now................the thought of building something like that scared me cause I didn't want to have egg on my face and screw it up "look at that crap Tim Baillie built, looks like sheit".........that is what kept going through my mind...............but so what, we built it and never looked back.....................learned from it, cringed over it and learned how to do them better and better then quicker each time we did one..................

Jamie............when you were a novice you probably weren't as good as you are now..............we all start somewhere................and I think we forget that many times..............

Guess that's more then 2 cents

I didn't post to brag on stuff I have done.

If it was said that he was "new to this type of fab, give me some comments to help me a long" then I would have worded this differently. Just like all the other replys I have done for new people or people that need help and admit they have no idea of how to do something.

However:

"customers can essentially buy off the shelf"

and

"Thanks for the kind words! I agree, a lot of the prefab stuff available is just really poorly built. It's nice to be able to offer something more solid and of better overall quality. Unfortunately, some customers don't always understand the benefits of custom-made boxes. Oh well..."

When a person posts a picture of work from a professional shop and says that the work is of better quality and then you would expect that it is done to a level of a profesional shop.

"It's nice to be able to offer something more solid and of better overall quality"

That work does not support this statement, that is my point. I was just the one that brought it up.

So we're in agreement on entitlement to opinion. How universal. If you would like to send me some pics of your work, please do so (insleybw@rogers.com) and I will be happy to leave some feedback. I feel my comments on your attitude are totally valid, but I don't expect everyone to agree with me. You came off as a jerk to me, and so far you haven't done anything to change that.
Did they go down hill after you read that other didn't like the work you had done ?
I kind of figured you'd go there. Let me be more specific... The thread went downhill when you decided to offer your "comments."

I think you'll find many, many post on this forum of me providing help to many people. New, and amature I have no problem helping. Your post is the first piece of work that I have made negative comments about, because I feel it desserves what I said.
I'm honoured to be the first, I really am. Just don't get used to responding to other people's work in that manner. It's a good way to lose respect, credibility and friends real fast. I have no doubt in my mind you have a pool of knowledge to offer people and that you have been a great help in the past, but if you're going to be a ***** when someone asks, I think they will start going elsewhere.

"*****-ish" "GTFO"

The words of a professional accepting requested comments, or is it.......
You're still lingering around that gray area. Coments are welcome, be them positive or negative. Bashing, belittling and trying to force some kind of superiority complex on me are not. I can accept the fact that this box may never fall into the "professional" category if you can accept the fact that the way you responded is not the right way to encourage me to do better.

I used to term "off-the-shelf" to denote something that can be easily put on display. A lot of fibreglass work becomes a permanent fixture in cars, but this box will not.

I'll remember in the future to make it clear that my experience with this kind of work is limited. I wasn't aware that people would so easily assume that I'm some sort of guru, but luckily you were there to dispel that rumor.

The poster did not come on and say that they were new to fibreglass or that the back frame was a temporary or non essential part. What are people left to think? Especially when, for example, a comment is made specifically about the staples...

I don't really get the slagging of premade boxes though as it seems that this is merely a fascia that will wind up dressing a prefab box. no?

Anyway - seems this post wandered off topic but I would like it to get back to the topic now.
Thx.
You are right about the fascia. I guess I should have given more info, and that's my bad. I am relatively new to fibreglass. And I realize the nature of the design may lead to some confusion... I'll see if I can whip up a diagram or something to give a better impression of what's going on.

And as Tim said, when you try something new, you don't want to hear brutally honest opinions.

I made sure I put down that it was the first time I molded dash piece and plastic when I posted up the Mazda dash I did, and those who gave me advice on what to do.

Ex- don't get discouraged, people have to start somewhere, but on the same note don't "belittle" the work another shop does, especially within a company you work for, we don't all know it's an inside joke. I make cracks all the time about waller and tim but we all know each other well and others know we know each other so we can get away with it. And the others crack back.
I actually used to work in the other shop for a time, so I know their installers well. But in light of the heat that comment has generated, if there are any employees on here from the North London store that took offence to what I said, I sincerely apologize. My intent was not to insult anyone; more like poke a little fun between industry members. Again, I am sorry if anyone was offended, and I will certainly try to consider what I say before it leaves my mouth, err... Gets posted on a thread.

I'm with Furley and Tim on one majopr point. We didn't all pop out of the womb and know how to do the things we can do today.(except Furley, he popped out with wire strippers in his hand!)Learning on our own time, versus learing as you go on a customer's car is the better way to go. Ask Furley, look at what I knew how to do 3 years ago as apposed to now. Keep on doing what your doing Ex. Just remeber there will always be people who will be negative about what your doing for they are scared of competition, then there will be people who feel secure enough to congradulate your efforts and help you get to the next level.--I've been lucky having people like Murley, Tim, Rod and Don help me learn at an exponential rate that I have. (Don't you buggers get all sappy now!)
