I see the validity in not having craftsmanship in the Rookie classes, while judges suggest improvements that can be made for Amateur classes when Rookies compete the next season. Rookies are allowed only to compete for 1 season still, right? After that they go to Amateur? The point of Rookie is to encourage newcomers to the sport. People who don't see the little things yet that seasoned competitors do. Safe and secure is about it I think. For the guy who went the extra mile, then he'll do that much in Amateur the next year.

Rookie though does allow for the odd few who dropped a wad at a shop to create a pro-level car and sweep the classes for at least 1 year. I remember that anyway back in the day when there was Novice class.

^ Yeah but the way the rules are for Rookie, the install portion is very regulated. Lots of yes/no stuff, not many grey area points. Makes it so a great DIY install like this one can compete with a bankroll.

See now, I think part of the issue here is people like Dave and myself are used to 'Old School IASCA' where there was no graduated judging - it was ALL ***** to the wall. There was Amateur and Pro, that's it. It made it hard for a lot of the DIY guys and IMO was one of the reason IASCA almost disappeared.

I remember taking install judge training from Mark Fukuda. Talk about cut and dry. For instance - head unit integrity used to be from 1-10 or something. For most guys, if the deck was crooked or loose it would score low, if it was decently mounted but a little flex, then it would score more. Not Mark - if he could budge it AT ALL by hand - ZERO! Even if it was just rocking in the cage. Screw heads not all aligned on your woofers - ZERO! lol, I'm glad he never judged one of my cars

So I can see where Dave is coming from - if it's crooked, it's crooked...

I understood all of his points. But I think that Rookie class is pretty good the way it is currently. You get your year to lean and then your put up against much more serious cars in amatuer.

I hear what you're saying, but correct me if I'm wrong, IASCA was taking a bit of a dive because of a lack of rookies getting into the sport.

I think the way it is now, gets rookies out to shows, there they see that they can compete and potentially win without dumping $10k+ into their cars.

proper is proper and should be scored, but straight and crooked or colour coordinated, to me, should be only for the very interested.

....running out to see if deck wiggles.....

^ I did not mean to bag on the Rookie class if that is how I came off. I think the Rookie class is a good idea as it does somewhat protect the new competitor.

I was just trying to help explain where I think Dave is coming from.

I know for myself, it's frustrating as hell. People show me their car and all I find myself doing is looking for what is wrong rather than just appreciating it for what it is. lol, this is why I only open my own trunk like twice a year

if "dave" is defro, I totally see where he's coming from, and where you're coming from.
not arguing one bit, I see the stuff (even in my own install) and know it should/could be better, I have yet to see or hear a perfect install that's why I'm a strong proponent to the way the classes work.
