My buddy has a '78 VW Van, under the rear seat there is a pair of 6x9's, and holes for a pair of 8's, it is enclosed, but is not a very tight seal, as the seat can flip up and down. Anyone know of some cheap 8's that will work well free-air, anyone know if the Tangband ones fit the bill? Thanks!

Try some a/d/s AS8 subs. They are designed for free air. I had a set that I sold a couple of months ago. They are hard to find though (used only) as they do not make them any more. They are very well built and have good power handling capabilities.
