Whats better? A door speaker installed so that it uses the whole door, or one thats closed in?

Enclosure all the way. It's a little hard to make an enclosure in your door though. You might want to look into kick panels. Im sure someone makes prefab kickpanels for your car. You drive one of the most common cars on the road (J body).

it's not for my sunfire, that things parked now. It's for my Mazda 3 sport, I want to keep everything looking stock, except for the sub enclosure.

Most people in the know will tell you it's not worth all the trouble to put an enclusore in the door. Also a lot of car doors don't have any room really to build one.

The trick is to seal your door well with a deadening matt and put in your speaker free air. A lot of speakers are made to work best in free air.

However you will get more rattles then a kick pod midbase but get more foot room and stealthier install. All about the compromise.

there something from METRA that can make the speaker it self SEALED in the back its called a "BAFFLE" i used them in my car and it made a HUGE difference... Some speakers do not react well to being cooped up like that.....The volume of air behind the driver in a kickpanel is very limited compared to the door itself, and my experience has been that most coaxes or comp midrange drivers sound better with the full (properly sealed) door air volume to work with. I'm sure there are lots of examples of great sounding kicks but it is up to you to decide if the difference is worth all the extra effort it takes to build them......

yes some dont but then again some do.... but when i put them on my speakers they made it sound a tighter and i found that the mids were a little louder... but it was just a suggestion just wanted him to get some options.

I'm just going to try poping them into the door and see how the speakers sound and go from there.
