Yes, the original post was how would a front stage @ 1 ohm sound -- I agree it might lose some "control"; however, my comments were with regard to your assertation that lower impedance speakers were a compromise.

Just for the record, I recall repair a pair of Castle Speakers that were rated at 6 ohm and it had only one resistor and two caps. (it looked like the world's cheapest speaker inside, but sounded great).

Funny, I have some experiance with the Quad ESL series -- the original electrostatic speaker -- voted the greatest audio product of all time by both Stereophile and the Absolute Sound. Quad says you can power them with as little as 15 watts In, fact it is recommended that you do not use more than @ 150watts with them.

Finally, I do not think that a 1 ohm "front stage" will sound great; however, I also don't think that any of us should assume that a lower impedance than 8 or 4 ohms automatically denotes poor sound quality.

I agree, Mike and that's what I was saying, and the reason I suggested a Zobel network. although my comment does have some weight, there are exceptions . The Castle's you mention are the Tyne or Clyde model, I used to sell them sounded nice, but a tad aggressive on the top end, (similar to the Totem) made a nice match with Sansui & Luxman recievers.
I feel that most lower impedance speakers are a bit aggressive on the upper end for my taste, it's their "trait" I suppose, having listened to many combinations I can also say, amplifiers react differently with each speakers, and that's where "matching" comes in.

Here's a question to stir the pot once again...
What is the problem with running an 8ohm speaker on an amp rated to run 4 ohms? Can't it simply be gained up to compensate for the reduced output? Wouldn't it have a better damping factor than the identical setup with a 4 ohm load?

^ some amps put out similar power at 2or 4ohms or 4and 8ohms ect... then there is not much difference....

If that's not the case... then it isn't just the same to crank the gain up... your amp is putting out more power at a lesser load because it's putting out more current.... crank the gain up at that greater load and you'll just run it into clipping from lack of voltage....

The amp I was talking about is rated for 50x2 @ 4ohms... Iwas told they bench out at more then 250x2 into 1ohm...

More then 6db of headroom @1ohm instead of 4 sounds like a nice benifit for SQ to me

And like I said, I doubt anyone could hear any difference due to the change in damping (so long as it's still over 25 or so, which I guarentee it will be) or in THD.....

My only concearn was getting the amp down to 1ohm for maximum output, while keeping the speakers crossed over....

just looks like haunz is trolling to me

if he want a 1 ohm load he needs 4 pairs of mids and tweets
the only ones made less than 4 ohms were the soundstreams mid and ***** but they hav'nt been made for quite a few years
