Good deal ? Alpine 7909 30th anniversary model
#22
as good as the 7909 may be, the DRZ is bringing technology that is 15 years newer. Thats a ridiculously long amount of time in the world of electronics for advancement. In no way at all is the DRZ lacking in quality, but you now have fibre optic outputs, and a vast amount of tuning capabilities as well. The DRZ is a deck that not only boasts the best SQ internals, but the Tuning capabilities for user control as well.
I am in no way bashing the 7909, but i agree with rob that the drz will outperform the 7909 nowadays.

What ? Have you seen the specs of the DRZ9255 ?
24 bit DAC, vs 18 bit linear system Alpine 7909
Time alignment, PEQ, 4-way Crossover selectable 6/12/18db with adjustable freq, gain, phase, etc.
external dc/dc converter vs. internal Alpine 7909
S/N ratio 115db vs 110db Alpine 7909
Harmonic Distortion (%) 0.003 vs. 0.002 Alpine 7909 is slightly better
drz9255 has 96 kHz Oversampling vs 352.8 on the Alpine 7909 (better)
Frequency Response (Hz) 5 to 20,000 (same)
Dynamic Range (dB) 100 (same)
0.5dB-Step Electronic Volume Adjustment Circuit (drz9255)
Two 2-Channel AUX Inputs (drz9255) vs 1 Aux input on the Alpine 7909
each unit has some better specs than the other...

hey rob, i agree with what you are saying about the DRZ vs. 7909, but if you believe that as well, why did you purchase a 7909 over a DRZ when you could have found one for the same price? ...just out of curiosity

I have a chance to buy a 30th anniversary model brand new for $1200 US.
A lil overpriced now, because I can get a new drz9255 for $800 !

lol, you played your cards right then. i thought you bought that $1200 7909. ...thats a pretty sweet profit on your turnaround though.
where can you get a $800 drz? im looking for a deck myself right now and thats definitely on my short list.

oh man do i love the look of those. ...that will be over a grand for sure though by the time bidding is done and you convert it to CDN.
i should look for one like you did with the 7909. buy it cheap fix it and either use it or turn a profit:P

Obviously, many people here don't know about the Alpine 7909. Yes, you can find many newer units with more features; The 7909 doesn't even have a subwoofer output, just front/rear pre-outs, it won't play MP3's, has no auxiliary inputs. But you will not find any unit that sounds as good as the 7909. It is simply the best-sounding car CD player ever made and will rival even most high-end home players. I remember as an Alpine dealer being skeptical when it hit our store, but one CD later and it was like night and day compared to anything else. The difference was that noticeable. Is it worth $1250? Probably not, it sold for less than that new. But its audio quality is unmatched. Here is a URL about it being selected as the "Best Ever CD Receiver":

Likewise was the Alpine 3545 amplifier. 250/watts RMS per channel, it is one of the all-time great car amplifiers.

I owned one. Bought it new when I worked for an Alpine dealer back in the day. Hated it. It had poor isolation, high output impedance, and poor shock resistance. And it didn't sound lightyears better than other decks to make up for the shortcomings. Power supplies and lazer assemblies are notorious for shutting down unexpectedly too. Total POC in my opinion. I've owned and sold a lot of what is now considered high end nostalgic gear - the 7909 is the only piece I'm not sorry I got rid of. junk.
