That is why you have to change everthing as previously stated. There is no easy way. You either have to find another factory headunit that's compatable(expensive) or start over (expensive). There's nothing decent in the $200 range.
Actually - what if the deck is broken as in I can't turn the power on; however, the time is still displayed, and I can still stick in CDs and eject them... is the power button fixable?

Hey Mushy, just wondering what you decided to do. I had a similar prob. with my E36 non-H/K 10 speaker system ('98 318). I replaced everything, the one good thing about the factory system was that all the wiring (H/U & speaker wires) was brought back to one location in the trunk where the factory amp was. All I had to do was route my RCA cables and the battery is already in the trunk. Does you E46 fit a single DIN aftermarket H/U? Too Bad such beautifull cars come with such poor audio systems.

Hey - sorry it's taken me this long to respond.
Actually, the solution was quite simple (and the problem was quite stupid -.-")
Turns out my cousin or one of her friends was too violent with the power button, and had pushed it in so far that it got "stuck"... a friend of mine was trying to help me see what was wrong, pulled off the power ****, realized the button was stuck, yanked it out, and all is well now
Thanks a lot, guys, for all the help!

So how do you like that H/K system? Does it have a sub in the car? I don't know what the stock system is like in the E46 but my E36 did not sound very good, I guess it was just a regular oem system, no bass and no real clarity. Do you think the H/K is worth it if you're a car audio geek? I'm curious as I think I will next need a wagon for the family and the E46's look pretty nice and would have room for a nice aftermarket system.

Yea, I believe it has 2 subs in the trunk
To be honest, I'm really not an audiophile/I've never had an AWESOME system, so, I couldn't really say if it's good.
However, I think it's adequate for my needs, as in... there's just enough bass/oomph (could have more... but it's fine)... and everything sounds clear... so I'm happy with it
