what do the voicecoils really do?

my sub has 4 voicecoils and one of them is apparently broken (thats how i bought it)
does the missing voicecoil play an effect on the sound quality?...or the loudness?.....?

if a voicecoil was shot, you'd have silly final ohm load when you wired the woofer.

Not if he knew which one was dead and didn't hook it up....

Having said that, the sub will never do what it's capable of.....best analogy I can think of is an AWD car with 1 wheel disconnected from the drivetrain.....the car will still run and move, but it will suck in the snow.....

As long as the remaining coils are wired up to a proper load for the amp, you will get sound.....since the box is made for another sub it won't work as well as it should either.....hate to say it but I'm sorry you paid $400 for that setup....the person who sold it to you is not a friend....

Having said all that, if you don't have any headlight dimming issues, don't change anything for now.....before you do, read the links on this page ask lots of questions here about things you don't understand and like the guy from ING Bank say's, "Save your money"

If you stay with this hobby, your next system will be much better in every way.....

Yup and you will get another system after this, and another after that, and so on..... LOL I know this from experience. The setup I have had in my car for a whole 6 months is being torn out this weekend for bigger and better. I might be willing to part with some of it if you are interested.
