Sometimes there are identifying marks on the sub other than a + or - symbol. If there is a dot of paint, a larger terminal compared to the other or one that is turned at a 45 degree angle, I use that as the positive. Another way to find out is to connect a 9 volt battery to the terminals. If the cone moves OUT, then you have the correct polarity. If it moves IN, then it's backwards.

Use a multimeter set to voltage (I think) and touch the multimeter leads to the terminals on the subs, if the reading is negative then you have the leads on the wrong terminals, If the reading is positive then The red lead on from the multimeter is the + terminal

Definitely, the 9v battery "speaker clicker" works every time, and it leaves no doubt what the correct polarity is, no guessing.

I've got a 9v battery here at my house that's got a small length of speaker wire permanently taped to it, so that I can touch the ends of the wire like probes to whatever I need to, to determine proper polarity on things.
It's an indispensible installer tool...

Just make a connection from the battery terminals to the sub's terminals.
If the sub goes OUT, the terminal that is connected to the battery's + is the sub's +, the other is the -.

And if the sub goes IN, the opposite is true.. flip the battery, and you'll see it'll go OUT.

using a 9 volt battery will do nothing to harm the speaker
i would't suggest it on a tweeter but a 1.5 would work ok for that
