Nothing like a pile of times wasters that you all afternoon pretending that they want something. So let's see your car, oh it's not here, you don't have one yet, you lost your license, you just started your job, you don't have a job, you had your stereo stolen....last year, it's for your friends car, oh not this friend...... Yup just let them be as Dave pointed out. Once they are actually looking at something rather than everything, ask to see their system and offer some free advice on how to improve it. Check for sound deadening. Ask them if they have ever seen something like this before, and pull out the fattest sub you have, ask them if they have ever heard a demo vehicle.

They came into your store for a reason, find out why. Leave them alone sure, but 99% of the time they either will approach you or you can ask them some type of open ended question to get them spewing info. Let them look around first and find out if they are there because the chick is next door in the clothing store / tanning bed whatever. If you don't get them talking, then they leave with a missed opportunity as a customer and also might not have anything to recommend to their friends as well.

Give them a demo and "wow" them. If you do, then they will always remember your shop and tell their friends about it. Sooner or later they will feel guilty and buy something...anything.

It is an easy way to get a "friend" and they will buy off you when they are ready, have cash, have vehicle etc... because the hard part is done. You broke the ice, didn't pressure them and now they trust you and everyone knows customers buy from you for 2 reasons.

Trust
Establish Value

Before I got into the industry, I was a regular consumer that liked to browse the car audio shops. I didn't have money, just dreams. I went into a couple stores and got absolutely ignored. When I asked a few questions but told them I wasn't buying that day I was told to come back when I was ready to buy. Suffice to say I never did and never recommended anyone else to either.

I get tire kickers every day and if I am not busy with another client I will demo the board or go out to the truck or to the webpage or photo album and show them the cool stuff. I will almost always go out to the vehicle and take a look at what they have, compliment them on the non-ghetto stuff and make suggestions that will improve their performance or install. It makes my day go by much faster and I build a bigger clientelle. They almost always buy something or at least I get them into attending shows or doing something to support the industry.

Better to get the kid interested in a new piece of car adio gear than ignoring him and he goes and buys a big goofy wing for his sunfire.

meh.....my .02 cents.
