how out of date is a JL 8w6?

it was their top end 6 years ago. Is it still a high end sub or would a new middle of the road i.e. jl 8w3v2 walk all over it?
thanks guys
and check the for sales - I have a bunch posted - you need gear and I need money for gear.

I might be alone on this one but honestly. In my opinion anyway. No GOOD speaker design ever goes out od date.
I'm not sure what Dukk is alluring to. Possibly the foam just wearing down?
I'd still consider the 8w6 as one of my own references for a 8" subwoofer. Maybe not in terms of excursion, power handling, anymore. But in terms of tonality, appealing package. Gotta say I still find the JL w6 line to be very sexy indeed.
If you can find a 8w6 for a good price and can accomodate it's space. it's a great little subwoofer.

^ Ben - don't you remember, back in the day, in around 1993-1994??
JL had a bad run of surrounds in general but especially on the W6 line. The surrounds would crack and fatigue very quickly - well within the warranty period. Was't JLs fault, their vendor was to blame.
Now as for foam rot - I have some very sweet drivers that are totally mint except for the 10+ year old surrounds are totally shot. One day I'll fix em.

I was 11 years old in 93
It was a bit before my time.
Most of the defects I imagine would have weeded themselves out by the time you would have seem me start making my way around car audio shops and playing around 98
That would explain why it being anything more than traditional foam rot as you said.... was beyond me I guess and I wouldn't recognize it as a defect.
Any of them surviving this build issue then that I've had my hands on would probably not have had it I guess. Makes sense if it's still alive X years later.
Gonna go back to my whole now. I feel like I need to go buy a bunch of old school stuff now.
That's the first time I've felt like a young pup roaming arounds the boards in a while. I like this board more and more the more time I spend here

After re-reading my post it appears that in those 21 years I still have trouble putting together full sentances using the right words.
Whole is not equal to hole...
I need to read a dictionary or something. Google has rotted my brain!

A good design is a good design, time will not take that away, just our memory of that product will fade over time OR we will categorize the product as a ‘legacy’ product and it will get a cult following. The single ended tube design sounds as good as they did 80 years ago (and is still a terrible performer on the test bench). The huge and powerful Altec Lansing 'Voice of the Theater' speakers are still in demand!

Apparently that's why the marketing division learned to slap a new dust cap on it
Agreed though. People always want new things. Part of the human condition I guess. I'm the same way. Got to try something new, got to try something new, got to try something new, got to try something new.
