okay... I"m still confused... but I'm guessing I want an amp that puts out between 500 and 600w rms?
can anyone give me a yay or nay on that assumption?
or is it all hit and miss?
and how do amps rated for 500w put out more than that? is it possible? why?

nope..
You have 2 300w subs.. which is 600 watts combined
You will drive them with a 700 watt amp, which will deliver approx 350 watts a side..
Most speakers will take a fair bit more power then rated, providing its a nice clean signal with minimal distortion. Use a low passcross over setting somewhere between 80 and 120hz.. and you will be laughing.

^ Dude just listen to the advice you're getting. A 700w amp would be perfect. Adding an extra 50-100 watts will not blow your subs.
300w is a conservative estimate.
What they're trying to say, is if you have too little power, and continually boost the volume, you'll be sending the subs a clipped signal and that will blow them a lot faster than giving them an extra few watts.
Having a little headroom is always good.

There are many companies out there that put nice and high numbers on there amps.
My 1600Watt Amplifyer is only 350 to 400 Watts a side..

My Kickers, rated at 150rms (SVC 8ohm), were running on a clarion dpx1001.2, bridged mono in parallel (4 ohm load). I ran them fairly hard sometimes (they're out for the winter); no problems had. In fact, I swear they were asking for more sometimes...
