Im all over the place...

So heres the deal. i'm in the planning and gathering stage of a build for my show/weekend 89 s-10 blazer.

the readers digest version:

What i have

the front 4 channel is a old school clarion apa4200 funning my component 2 way and tweets and my rear 6x9's.

Currently my one Infinity 12" is being driven by a alpine md-m500.

and

so far for the new setup i have a hfi1500d to run my new subs, 20ft of 0 guage, and a redtop optima.

My plan so far is, upgrade the electric, new sub set up, midbass or front sub, and new deck:

The Electrical
-to upgrade my electrical to 0 guage (including big 3)
-Pick up a yellow top and diode battery isolator (for running the system at car shows)
-200 amp alt

deck:
- pic up this alpine deck 4v preouts, graffic and parametric eq, crossover with flat-24db drop off etc etc...

now the hard part that i've changed my mind about 100 times a day.

the trunk/cargo area. ok... i'm keeping the back seat and everything is going in the hatch. gonna run one 10 or 12 or 2x 8" up front (on a bandpass xover if needed.)

so here what ive pondered so far:

idea 1: 6 orion cobalt 10". $350 shipped

2 up front running of the alpine, and 4 in the back of the 1500d. problem the rear 4 will be way over powered, total rms 800w peak 1600.

Idea 2: 2x 12" hifonic b12sqd4 600 rms $280 shipped

so 1200w rms being powered by 1500w rms

Idea 3: 5x hfi dvc4 600w $220 shipped

300w rms (1200w rms total for the 4) for the rear, and 1 up front off the alpine.

So, that the 3 options right now.

My truck will mainly be for show but i wanna do the odd db drag for fun. were gonna do a custom install over the winter.

and i am asking for any sugestions, anything... inspire me. the amps are static they arent going any wheres. I got 1500w rms at 1ohm in the back and 500 at 2ohm in the front.

thanks

I assume you mean that you'll be using the Alpine amp you currently have, not head unitpower

Can I ask why you want to add this many woofers? Is it for "wow" effect? Sound-wise, my feeling is that 2 8" off the Alpine (actually, it really should be stereo) and a couple (or 4) of the latter Hifonics woofers running off the big mono amp would sound better and make better use of the power on-hand than just stuffing the vehicle full of 10's or 12's... You could run the 8's and the rest of your front stage active, then have the rest of the low end out back for big thump and "bling" factor

first thanks, this is exactly why i asked.

there is a little bit of wow factor involved. but its not overly important. ya i'm leaning toward the 2 square 12" and a 8" front. but what would work better the 4 300w 12" 0r the 2 600w 12"

I've never really liked square drivers, but that's solely personal preference. I think the ones you have in mind will give you the right mix of performance and "bling". Remember that power is not a number that you must stick to 100%. Given the proper enclosure, a driver can handle more power than rated, so the trick is to make sure that you're not feeding the woofer power that is going to push it to it's mechanical or thermal limits. The last selection you gave you'll want to run 4 of them to keep them out of crazy power levels individually, but it seems like the 2 square woofers are where you're going anyways, and they'll handle that power in the proper enclosure. I think the 8's up front and the 12's out back will be best for you. What do you have for a front stage?

in the dash:

clarion src4653 plate type 2 mid and tweet. 35w rms 135 peak. hpf set at 170 hrz

and clarion 6x9's hpf set at 100hrz

but i think im gonna replace those with a 5" or 6" 3way
eventually.

both are running off my 4 channel.

Awesome idea. An 8", 6.5", 3 or 4" driver, and tweet, on each side has high SQ written all over it if it's set up right (not gonna lie, it'll be tricky, but with the right drivers, AWESOME). The 12's out back at that point are strictly show and thump, but you can throw that amp's remote wire on a switch if you wanna show the SQ then SPL or all of it together... Sorry, started living vicariously through your setup LOL

Lol... I'm just trying to complete the image in my head so I know where I'm going. The blazer gets parked next month so I can start diasembling it for the build. It's gonna be slow but worth it.

Ive contacted hifonics about if it's possible wire 4 dvc 4 ohms down to one. And yes the 1500d has a remote dial

Nice. Do you have any processor planned? If you plan to run the 8's as part of the front stage, you're going to want a way to tune the tweets, both mids and the 8's so you're making the most of them. Ultimately you should see about replacing the Alpine mono for a 2 channel, if that's the direction you want to go. The JBL MS-8 would be great, as well as the Audison BitOne, and there are others. There is also the Alpine Imprint module designed for this headunit, and it will allow you to run 3 way... What I described is a 4 way system, however, so with the MS-8 being 6 channels, it would most likely be better suited. All deck channels can run to the MS-8, and the subwoofer amp's signal can be pulled from any one of the other amp's pass-through and crossed-over at the sub amp itself. If you don't want to go to these lengths, stick with just the 2 12's for now, as the 8's will most likely make it sound poopy (with your current front stage or not) without some form of processing.

Have you chosen the subs? Sealed or ported? How much space are you using, like 5-6 cubic feet?

and i am asking for any sugestions, anything... inspire me.
Have you considered cheap 18's? Maybe four 300W 18's in a sealed 14 cube wall. You would atleast have a bunch of cone area, and it'd look sweet. The ones I'm suggesting have a Q of .707 in 7.84 cubic feet (FC @ 37.61 HZ), and a Q of 0.9186 in 3.5 cubic feet (FC @ 48.92 HZ), so you'd probably want a big chamber for each. I thought it was $280 each for the Hifonics, what was I thinking... I wrote all of this out thinking 4 18's it would be cheaper >.<

Neither of these are "flashy", but the DCON looks damn beefy.

SSA DCON 10" & 12" $100/$125
12" specs
300W RMS
Sensitivity 89.1 dB
Weight 20lbs
Xmax 16mm
Ported 2.25 cu.ft. @ 28-33hz opt.

YouTube - 10" SSA DCON Subwoofer abusing a trunk lid

Hifonics Brutus B12SQD4
Sensitivity 85 dB
Xmax 15 mm

... what would work better the 4 300w 12" 0r the 2 600w 12"
Four DCON 12's have 95.1 dB sensitivity all together (+3), and the Hifonics have 88 dB efficiency with two 12's. The DCON seems better by 7 dB, but that could all change with the box and . What did you mean by work "better", just slam better? An Fi BTL 18, DC sounds whatever, and Digital Designs 18 on 1500W would pound too.

Dayton DCS450-4 18" $115.85 (1-3)/$110.66 EA (4+)
300W RMS
Frequency range: 22-500 Hz
Fs 25 Hz
Sensitivity 91 dB
Xmax 8.25mm

Ya, right now, I don't wanna. Build a wall, it's not out of the question. But I wanna keep my back seat.

But thanks

I want all ideas, no wrong answers here
