Unhappy

ok i have 2 Kenwood Excelon 12" dual voice coil subs powered by the Kenwood 1000 watt mono amp. I just built a box for it. I had both subs in it and playing and noticed that one sub was not working so I checked everything out and all good but not working so I take the sub out and touch the postive and negative wire to one voice coil on the non-working sub it still doesn't work and i do the same to the other one it works. i blew my one voice coil. I guess. The next day i m crying about my sub goin while the other one is playn BOOM it goes too no bass. i cry. again. I m i stupid . im no expert on this. so i brought it all to the dealer which tells me to bring to the repair shop. I don't know why it went If any body knows why this could have happened please help i would be very very greatful.

You may have possibly had the gain turned up too high on the amp. Or the bass control up too high! There are quite a few things that can contribute to a sub blowing. Don't feel stupid. It happens even to the most seasoned veterans of car audio all the time. I blew a pair just last summer And I am sure all the guys on this site can tell you more than their fair share of stories. It happens! Make sure you have your gain set to an appropriate level and the bass set to a reasonable level next time. But there are other contributing factors as well. Someone else can probably touch on this more. It is 5AM here and I can barely read my own typing enough to continue!

It doesnt happen to the veteren of car audio. Blown subs/speakers dont just happen. It is very rare for a company to have a DOA out of the box(but check with the warranty facility). Usually it tends from abuse, hope it is warranty!!

I agree that you can't just blow subs from nothing. But I assure you that I take good care of my subs anything that cost as much as they did. I also did have the gain and bass control on full but this amp isn't very high powered and is still under powering the the subs. When they both went I had just put them in to a new box that I built that is considerly bigger then the one before could this have been a factor. jw. thanks for the input.luckly my subs are under warranty but it is suppose to take something like 8 weeks to fix I can wait but the problem is that when i get my stuff back if I do it again I want to know what happened so i can help to prevent this again.

just because the amp isn't high powered doesn't mean that having the gain and bass boost at full isn't going to do damage, it's possible the amp was driven into clipping and that damaged the subs.

I know it doesn't just happen to anyone. I was simply stating that I am sure almost everyone here has blown a sub or two. **** happens! No big deal! Trial and error is what it's all about. The gain is a hair too high, the bass is set a hair too high. It happens! That is all I was pointing out!

Clipping distortion is rarely the root cause of speaker death...

If one sub blew but the other is fine, the obvious answer is factory defect... My bet is the cone still moves freely... yes?

That probably means there was a shoddy soldiering job done where the tinsel leads are connected to the voice coil... and it burnt off...

Although there are other possibilities, that's the most likely IMO...
