Innovatek W-72GPS Questions?

Hi guys,

i have some questions regarding a head unit i just ordered online. I ordered the Innnovatek W-72GPS 7" touchscreen head unit from Mp3PlayerStore.com.

Now i know its not a top of the line head unit, but im a tech head, and was just looking for something cheap to fill the double din hole in my chevy 1500 silverado dash! i liked the features of this unit as it has a good gps chip built in, and doesnt have a dvd/cd drive, as it uses USB, and memory cards/bluetooth to transfer music from stics,cards/iPhone. it also boasts the ability to use a (up to) 1 TB HDD, which i think would be awesome. im planning on puttting a 3.5" 500 or so GB HDD in the glove box..... I also purchsed a license plate rear view camera as well for back up cam....

Ok, with this, im also wanting to change out the speakers in the truck. Im thinking Infinity Kappa 639I 6 1/2" for the doors, Infinity Kappa 9629CFP 4 x 6 for the rear pillars, and a Kicker 10TCVT102 10" sub, its built for behind regular cab pick up. The amp im looking at powering all this is an Infinity REF5350A 5 Channel AMP. everything is based on 2 OHM impedance.

what im wondering is, will all this stuff work with the head unit i've chosen? I dont want to order it all up and find out the head unit won't support the AMP, or setup.....I've never installed a car audio system before (besides changing out a radio in my Dodge caravan!), so ive never installed an amp, or aftermarket speakers, ect, and really dont know what to look for.

if anyone can quickly check out the specs on the head unit and let me know if its all basically compatible, i'd really appreciate it!

heres a link to the head unit:

thanks for now,

GiNNz!

From what I can see other than questionable quality you should have no problems hooking it up to a 5 channel amp.

yeah, i hear ya.... well, i figured what the heck, i'd give it a try. Im a PC guy, and other then the price, was drawn to it for its PC "quality's". I like the fact it doesnt have a dvd drive and can use a hard drive to store the media!

well, at least once i have it all installed, and if it goes south, all i have to do is swap the head unit for a Kenwood, Alpine, or Pioneer.... ;-Ill let you guys know how it goes.

thanks,

What area of the world are you in. I would give you a hand if you are close to Brampton.

Thanks alot for the offer, but im in manitoba..... I have the unit running in my office for now, on a 12v reg. power supply. Im just getting used to it, and installing stuff. I took out the stock NAV software and installed iGo8 and NA maps. it is 100% better then what it had!

so far, this unit is awesome! for 200.00 it's a steal IMO! it has so many features.... as long as it stays working, im really impressed with it! its exactly what i wanted, as im more of a PC nerd than an audiophile! the ability to go on the internet is cool, and i can use my iPhone 4 as a hotspot! the bluetooth works great too! I also hooked up the back CAM just to see how it works, and so far im impressed with that a well!

im going to be looking for a way to install linux in it though, but finding all the drivers, and getting a front end will be difficult. AFAIC Linux would be a waaayyyy better OS for such a device!

ill keep this thread updated on its performance!

how is the display quality? it should be a fairly high resolution picture but specs don't always tell the whole picture.

btw, how did you 'crack' the unit?

the display is quite good. i noticed it depends on the format the video is compressed in, and whether its played off usb stick or transferred to SD card. and i didnt "crack" anything, i just took the sd card out and put it in my PC and replaced the stock crap gps software with iGo8 and NA maps..... there is a place in the "innosoft" software to point out the directory where the gps software is stored on the card. its quite easy to change software with the way its set-up....

ive been spending alot of time getting familiar with the GUI, as its very extensive! one thing im noticing is that the usb ports don't seem to want to work properly! there is one on the front and one on the rear of the unit. I can't seem to use the front one with a USB stick to play, or transfer files! they only work on the rear one. Although i can use the included USB WiFi adapter on either of them! i cant figure that out..... at first i thought the front one didnt work, but it does with the WiFi adapter, so its gotta be working.....

the rear one uses a normal USB connector, and the front USB plug is a mini plug, that uses a 6" "pigtail" that adapts it to a normal usb plug.....

there is alot to figure out with this unit and the software that runs it.

Ok, i just re-formatted the usb stick, and now it appears to work fine on the front port..... :-)

hmm, in the old days i know you could crack some of the simpler GPS units and get access to the winCE OS. people were putting in all sorts of other software at that point (mps players, movie players etc).

so is the video better on usb or sd? i had missed the first part where this doesn't have an optical drive. i guess that can account for the cheap price. how's the sound quality?

I have no problem changing GPS software on the unit. and as far as video playback, if you put it on the SD Card, it plays back alot smother then from a USB stick... as it seems to use USB 1.0 standard. I kinda like the fack there is no optical drive. in my past experiences, they are often the first thing to stop working properly,(discs failing to initialize, or they get stuck, skipping, ect...), as the environment in a cab is often dusty, or generally harsh for such stuff....(if you drive alot of gravel roads!).

I still want to try an external hard drive, i plan on putting a four port usb hub, custom fitting some ports in the dash, or just under it somewhere, to plug devices in for charging, ect, and i want to put a 500 GB or so external hard drive in the glove box of my truck to hold a wack of tunes, and some video, depending on how the playback is over it. Video isnt really a priority, but i could hold a massive collection of music this way! the specs on the unit say it works with an external HDD, im just not sure if a hub will function, id imagine it should though....

Well my install is almost all there! I picked up a very good cond. Infinity BasslinkT 10" powered sub yesterday for a steal of a deal! My Infinity Kappa 639I's and Infinity Kappa 4629CFP's are on their way!

Now all i need is a GOOD used 4Channel Amp, pref rated at around 80W x 4 and up! Ideally i'd like to get an Infinity REF 475A, as then all my speakers would match up!

Then i'll need a Wire kit, 4 ga. i suppose? and whatever else needed?

looks like i'll get to installing everything just after Christmas!
