Input Sensitivity

Now I realize that 4/5/8V (or any voltage unit) is not constantly output from a headunits preout section.

These ratings are max power on musical peaks.

however, how much is too much?

has anyone ever had issues with the input sections on amplifiers being fed too strong a preout signal?

my scenario would involve a 5Volt rated headunit with a (up to) 2Volt rated amp.

thanks!

Normally you won't have problems, as you said, these are max voltages with everything at max (bass, etc).

Anything more than 4v is just a gimik/marketing/waste.
Too high input voltage you can clip amps easily !

So companies like Audio Control who make 13v line drivers are making electronics for no reason?

thanks guys, I just wanted to know if an amp can be damaged.

I imagine even putting too strong a signal in wouldn't hurt it unless it was prolonged use. Which will not happen.

as to whether or not it is a gimmick, can you elaborate Rob?

No. They are making line drivers for people who fine tune thier system.
99% of car audio people dont .

It doesnt make any audible difference in a car audio environment.

well the whole idea of stronger preouts is to lower the noise floor.

i think stronger preouts effectively do this. especially in a car environment where the audio chain is so susceptable to noise.
