The JL 500/1 makes the same power into 3 ohms as it will into 1.5 ohms. Using the 10" will allow you to port your enclosure as well. It should be louder.

I agree that the 10w7 ported will be louder than the 2 8w7's in a sealed box with the 500.1

You won't go wrong with either sub.......I would go for the 10W7, but use a 1000/1 amp instead of the 500/1. Using a 1:3 gain ratio your only looking at around 300watts average music power as opposed to 150watts average with the 500/1.....

A 1:3 gain ratio is generally considerer optimum. It means that if your deck has a maximum unclipped output of 3volts that you set up your amp to clip with 1volt of input.

How do you figure that 1/3 gain will yield 1/3 the power? Maybe you mean that because music is dynamic and amplifiers are inherently inefficient using the Jl 1000/1 will provide sufficient headroom?

At any rate using a 500/1 will power a 10w7 just fine.

I never said 1/3 gain or anything about efficiency......It's a fact that with the crest factor used during the recording process.....ON MUSIC, not test tones, that 500/1 will only put out an AVERAGE of 50watts with a 1:1 gain ratio, that's why a 1:3 gain ratio is the prefered compromise to maximise noise/signal/power performance.
