Thanks for all the advice and comments. It has helped me a great deal in thinking over my project. I have begun my build and have decided to go with 3 10" RE audio sx subs run @ 1.33 ohm as 2 12" subs would not quite fit. More cone area with 3 10's anyways. I was going to go with 3 10" kicker L5's but they require 1.25 cf per and the RE's only need 1 cf min per ported. So I think I made the right choice. I quickly slapped a box together to see what size I could fit in my trunk. After 2 cut downs of 1/2 inch here and there I was able to squeeze that sucker in. The box is 3.0094 cf internal. Minus the magnet/basket displacement it will 2.7 cf so I will throw in a bit of polyfill and voila.

Here are some pics of Phase 1 build.

In pic 2 you can see that the box barely went in.
In pic 5 you can see the front side where the subs will be mounted in a row just touching each other with 1.5 inches to spare. Also on the rear deck there is a 7 inch cut out for the stock sub where I will be putting an external aero port flush mounted.

Oh and this might sound stupid but I can't figure out how to upload pics in full size on this forum. Can anyone help me out there?

You are better off with 2 drivers in the larger amount of airspace vs. 3 drivers in the smallest amount of airspace. The minimum specs are for the minimal passable amount of response, not for any ideal type of response.

you would have been better off with 2 10" ported L5's

I havent bought the subs yet. That will be tomorrow. I just decided on 3 re audio 10's. You think 2 drivers are better than 3 in that box? What about 3 10" l5's sealed? That would be good for the air space I have. I had 2 10's in a 2.25 cf box so I don't just want to get another 2 10's.

2 10" l5's only have 900 rms rating and I would run 1800 into them.

Again, just because you have x amount of space and 3 subs fit that amount of space at the advertised minimum amount of box space does not mean that it is necessarily the ideal results you will be getting. You are dealing with the smallest amount of space to get the passable amount of response instead of the ideal amount of response. Go into this knowing what it is you are trying to accomplish. Are you after 3 subs to fit the space and do what they can given that space or are you after a solid amount of output that delivers the results that you want? Two subs in the right box will outperform 3 subs in the minimal box in most cases.

Ok, well I do want massive bass for that car but I think 3 subs would look so damn sweet. L5's say .6-1.5 sealed. So 3 @ 1 cf each ( almost ) would be good or not? IYO would 3 l5's sealed in this space out perform the 2 10's that I had?

Massive bass at what frequency? For sealed the <30hz region is great while if you tune to 38hz it's going to feel forcefull. If you have 3 cubes you might want to get a ported 12" on a lot of power and tune it at 35hz. Keep upgrading subs until you get one that's loud enough on RMS. Try a BTL and if that doesn't work, a ground zero audio on 6500W.

The cone area gain with 3 10's vs 2 12's is 9.5 square inches, an 8" driver has about 50.25. 2 12's have better efficiency and will dig deeper allowing you to tune higher. Also at 1.33 ohm your subs don't see full power.

Ok you guys seem to know what your talking about so how about two tens in optimal airspace but where to port should I still go up through rear deck

Lord Huggington 05-25-2010 04:29 PM

2 ported SX 10's in 1.3-1.5 (each) cf3 @ 35hz on 2k would pound. Point everything into the car. It looks like you could fit more space if you used two boxes, just to get them in. Rip out that piece of plastic that's covering the trunk-cabin opening.
