Question

Hmm that title may have been misleading as you'd think i was in the loop at one point. I used to follow subs a lil closer though, not that i'm as smart as most of you people.

Anywho, i'm lookin to upgrade from my two 12" type r's to a single more powerful sub. Probably something around 1500w either 12 or 15...not really sure as of yet. To begin with it would be run off my current concept cc-d800 amp (800x1@1ohm). I would in the future upgrade that to preferably something around 1500-2000w, but that would be a lil while yet.

Back in the day, the brahma (which i conned my brother into buying and he loves) and the RE XXX were the big subs, and i still kinda like both of those (more so the xxx - probably cause it's name is cool). But both appear to be a bit of a pain to get in canada.

I'm happy with the sq's of my apines (currenlty ported) but haven't heard much for better sq subs so to speak. I definitely want louder, as having a ceiling on loudness kinda sucks. That being said i definitely don't want worse SQ.

What are my options, what should i generally look into? I haven't researched much else as i dunno a ton about anything else as far as what to research.

I'd definitely like to buy used, as i'm by no means rich. But did get my bonus from work which is kinda neat, and lately a couple people wanna buy my two alpines which will help.

(in the distant future, i'd like to get a second one of these so-called super subs, and probably a second amp...but thats in the future a long time away i'm sure)

I did an A-B between two type R 12s against a 10W3 Jl.
The JL 10 was louder, tho not as good for SQ, so I have no doubt that you can find a single 12 that can do what you're looking for. 3dB difference in efficiency can do wonders.

The type R's were in a 4 ft box, the 10 in a 1.1 ft box. Both were wired to 4 ohms, in the same room, off the same amp.

No experience with the Brahma, or XXX, but an ID Max or the like will do what you want..

I recently built a Pioneer SPL 12 in a band-pass box (according to their reccommendation) and it's suprisingly nice, low, loud and tight, in a reasonably small (tho heavy) box. Two would be sic. The price new is quite low, considering the technology. Worth an audition.

BTW....smart is a matter of attitude.
I learn something new every day, but I'm still as stupid as I was when I was 20!
And I'm still always right!

And have you got a SS filter on that Concept amp?
Do you use it?
If so, does it make a difference?

I do have a subsonic filter, i dunno how much of a difference it makes. I thought it only cut out hte inaudible frequencies. Meaning that whether it's on or not i generally wouldn't be able to tell. But the subs are still going, so i guess it's working heh. I don't know what it's set to anymore, probably around 20ish hz....i haven't had to fiddle for quite some time.

I realize that a single "super-sub" might not be a huge jump in spl, especially considering i'd be losing total surface area. But i think it could generally be close (especially if i went to a 15) and i think the SQ will improve which will also be nice. But in the future, as i mentioned, the amp will be upgraded to hopefully double the wattage which will also help a bunch.

I think you'll be hard pressed to get better SQ than you already have, if the enclosures are correct for the sub/vehicle.....you may be able to get some more SPL tho.
I haven't heard any 15s that have a real nice transient response, without losing the low frequency extension that they're known for.

Interesting that you don't hear a difference with the SS Filter. Try turning it off for a week, and see if you notice a change in the definition of the bass notes.
Be careful with em with it off!.

Hmm i shouldn't say i didn't notice a difference. I actually don't think i've ever tried turning it off. Was always at the understanding it was there for safety...and so that was end of that story heh.

I think you should look into the 9100? series of DD subs, they are to be the SQ/SPL subs. More towards SQ, but they can get damn loud. Just check them out @ www.ddaudio.com and if you like what you see, talk to the A-Team, or Ray @ FX Audio.

Lots of big super subs coming out shortly.
Re has the new XXX coming out (45mm Xmax, same great SQ supposedly), ED has a replacement to the older A-series which were awesome, Soundsplinter has the new RL-S coming out, etc.
I would wait until closer to Christmas and see the reviews on some new gear.
