Hey i'm looking at getting some subs for my car. I've got a 91 plymouth sundance. I've installed a kenwood mp342u deck and a set of alpine 500's in the front. I realize i should have gone with components now, but too late. Anyways i found an ad on craigslist for two jl WO subs in a high output roxbox box and an alpine v series monoblock 700watt amp. He says the rms rating is about 175 watts. The subs are from 05. I am in canada and he is asking 350 for everything. Is this a good deal? What do you guys think these are worth? Are there any other questions i should be asking? Here is the link to the ad.

Also, what is the most difficult part about setting up a sub and amp? I am extremely new to car audio. I set up my deck and speakers ok, albeit it was a bit frustrating at points. Would it be possible for me to set it up on my own without too much difficulty?

Hey man. Listen it depends big time on what you want out of your system. I learned the hard way over the years to never buy just "what you want" right now. Always give yourself some headroom so your not switching systems all the time. The JL W0's are entry level subs, and will be ok if this is your first system, but youll probably want to upgrade. The amp in question with 175w RMS is considerably weak for 2 12's, even the WO's. Youll probably want to look into a solid CLASS D!!!! ( Class A/B cheap amps drain more power than you need and that = dimming on stock electrical, not worth it ). I bought my Alpine MRP-M450 (400rms @ 2 ohms) for $140 canadian with shipping and taxes. Look for something like that. As for subs, the W0's would be ok, but your always better off building your own box. If you need help PM me I can help design one for you, and maybe find you a sub.

Dont buy the package.

P.S If you are reasonably handy and a decent learner in terms of new concepts, you could do this all yourself including building the box, no problem. If you need any help like I said PM me.

 

sorry the subs are rated at 175 rms not the amp. The amp is 700rms if that makes a difference. What would you recommend for a decent first set up for around $400? I don't really know where to look in canada other than crutchfield.ca.

 

Your best bet is probably 1 good 15, and then if you want later buy a matching other 15 if you need more bass, that way you dont have to upgrade. Make an account on caraudio.com and look at the forums there. You can get about 1200w RMS for around 180$ cdn or so, then spend another $150 on a sub and 40 or so making a custom box.

As for a sub, I have a 15" RE SRx in the classifieds that is pretty much new (Used a week). I bought 2, only needed 1 as it is mega loud already with my box. Other choices may be an L7, Alpine Type R, Most Digital Design subs, etc. Those can all be pretty expensive, depends what you want. I am asking 150+ shipping for mine, a little cheaper than an L7 or Type R.

 

I would say the most difficult part would be getting all the rattles out of the trunk. Sound deadner does not kill all of it and it can be very time consuming.

 

$400, drive up to Courtenay and see me. I can line you up with a amp, slot port box and a pair of 12" subs for that. New, with warranty.

$400 for box, subs and amp................ sounds good BUT what are you getting for that money. You could get hooked up for $200 new with warrantee too............. for absolute garbage.
