If your looking for some real bass, imo, you should expect to pay a little bit more then $500 for a sub and amp. Alpine Type E is a great sub, however it is still a lower end sub and by the sounds of what you want most likely will not give you the bass you are looking for. My recommendation is to check out some other subs capable of a bit more power or maybe run dual subs.

I disagree m3n2ce ... going from 6.5" in the rear doors to that 10" sub will definately qualify as "real bass" in this situation. In fact, I would suggest that he could spend less $ and still be very happy. However, if he wants new/easy that Alpine setup will do just fine.
That being said, if you are willing to buy used and build a box you could go with something like this and then sell the old enclosure. The JL300/4 is worth $250 alone, so that's a sweet deal.

I think you'd enjoy a setup like this much more for the same price range;

"real bass" really depends on what you want. Most of my systems in the last 25 years have been very powerful 1kw-2kw systems, but my current one is only 320 watts total with 160 watts to an efficient 12" sub in a very well designed, large ported box. The bass is very real, and easily shakes the car, the seats, outside/rearview mirrors and gets really low. Will it blow away the guy next to me with the 2 15's and 1kw..no, but it's definitely real bass and sounds damn good! Again, it all depends on what you want, and proper design. This sub system can be reproduced for about, $150(custom built to my specs box) + $80(kicker cvr 12 sub) + $100 (soundstream or any other decent brand 150-200 watt amp)...so about 350.00 or less if you can find good deals. The secret is to design using the right equipment to maximize sq and output as a system (if you get a 1000 watt sub that's not very efficient, and give it 150 watts in a small sealed box...you will be disappointed).

All i meant by what i was saying is that it sounded like he wanted something that could handle a lot as well as sound great and produce a ton of bass. coming from an Alpine type-E your just not going to get something that's going to get loud and sound great at the same time. I suppose that's my opinion but I am sure there's a lot more people who would agree.

Now as far as that new set up that's a great choice. Same amp with the type-e which is a great amp and you cant go wrong with a type-r sub well built and sound great, especially this years models.
