Makin my box...
Alright for a while now I have been telling myself that i need to figure out how to make a ported box for my new sub. I have the next week off of school so i think it would be a proper time for me to learn. I don't know anything about ported boxes, actually, i don't get why there are slots (wouldn't just drilling a hole in the box do the same thing?). I would really like to figure out how to make them and how to "tune" the boxes. It seems like this will be very complicating to learn but i am hoping it is easy. So if anyone could start me off with some knowledge about making a ported box or if you could direct me to a website that would awesome.
I was reading the manual and this did not make any sense to me...
Ported Box = .75 cube feet
Port Diameter = 3 inch
Port Length = 25 inch
HOW CAN THE BOX HAVE A 25 INCH LONG SIDE IF ANOTHER SIDE MUST BE AT LEAST 10 INCHES WITH AN 8 INCH DEPTH AND YET BE UNDER 1 CUBIC FOOT OF AIRSPACE!!!?????
Plus the manual said i should tune the port to 28 hz's... How in the world do you do that???

If you've never built a box before, this page: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/support_pages.php?page_id=141 will give you an idea of how complicated it can be. I would suggest at the very least you find someone in your area who has built a few to help you with this one.
Failing that, your options are: (1) build a sealed box first to get a feel for the process, or (2) pay a reputable shop (preferably an Orion dealer) to build the ported one for you.
A sealed box is much more forgiving of errors in design than a ported box, but it will work with your sub. You may decide after sucking up some MDF sawdust that you really don't want to do this after all... , and if nothing else the attempt will give you a whole new appreciation for those who do this stuff for a living...
Also, to answer your question, you tune a ported box by changing the size of the port.

id save you money and go get one made for your speaker. if you are not versed in box building . research it thouroughly and build it once you know for sure. dont hit and miss cause you either have crappy sound or lose control of the woofer and kill it.

Tuning a 0.75cuft cabinet to 28hz is a bad idea anyway. Try 35hz.

Oh, no, i have plenty of experiance building boxes. Since i first got into car audio (almost a year ago) i have built five different sealed boxes. The bigger my subs get the more complicated it gets. Other than my first one i had all the wood cut then i would glue it and screw it (i don't have the right tools to cut the wood). But now i am getting tired of sealed boxes and i want to experience my subs' full potential so i figured i better learn.
...thanx fer all the website suggestions and info.

Sounddomain.com has a good tutorial to get your started on ported boxes. It's not too hard, but you definetely need to be more accurate with your calculations. Check it out: http://forum.sounddomain.com/forum/u...;f=11;t=060743
