Mazdaspeed Protege, need information.

Just some added info, I beleive I read that the engine has no forged internals whatsoever, they just slaped on the turbo with little changes to modify compression so that it could accomadate a little boost.
If speed is what you want, I doubt this is the car to get it in.
However, it has been quoted to be one of the best handeling cars in its category. With not to much turbo lague.
I do agree though, I defenetly prefer the mazda 6. But thats just me.

Buzz, fired ya an email about the car..
Mazda's specialty lately is handling, and not so much power. The Mazdaspeed runs to 60 in just over 7 seconds. If it's really around 30,000, you aren't too far from the WRX at 35,000.
Mazda did more than just slap the engine together though. Callaway cars was instrumental in helping choose a spooler for this project, and boost comes on reasonably low, under 3000 RPM, keeping the car streetable.
Now, considering it is a Turbo'd car, a big intercooler, 3 more pounds of boost, and a nice exhaust system, and you'd be running close to 200 HP, with some tuning...

I got beside an MSP last night coming home from work. Had an Mpsport.net sticker on it, had an intercooler upgrade behind the lower grille (which would be the first thing I would do as the stocker is pathetic) and a blow-off valve.
Mazda frustrates me. They always come up short of the mark of making the hottest cars in their class. Protege5: excellent car, cool looks, great handling, nice price but SLOW. MP3: had all the looks of a street import racer and handling but again NO POWER. MSP: Finally! A turbo! But only 170 HP? Needs another 20 at least to be a serious contender. They keep the boost so mild on that thing. So much potential there.
For that kind of bread, I would personally wait until the SRT4 comes to Canada and spend an extra $1k for a car that wipes the streets with the MSP. And don't even begin about the Neon POS theory. I've owned an 02 R/T for a year and it's been excellent. SRT4: 215 HP (underrated), 2.4L for big torque, 14 psi of boost, and no mufflers SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH VROOOM! PSHHHH VROOOOOOOOM PSHHH

sux2bu.. but what if speed is not the reason for the purchase?? What if I am buying it for the looks and styling inside and out? And the rarity of the vehicle? It is a nice car, correct?
Professor, don't laugh but I had a 91 Turbo sprint back in the day.. I ran it with regular unleaded and never had a problem.. I don't think the fuel has any effect on the turbo, does it? I would assume proper start up and shutdown play more of a factor.. correct me if I am wrong...

if the manufacturer calls for premium you will need it as the spark curve and tuning of the engine were designed to take advantage of the premium fuel.
running regular fuel on an engine designed for premium will cause poor performance and even worse detonation wich can lead to severe engine failure (burnt pistons & valves, ect....)
it comes down to if you wanna buy the fancy car you got to pay for the fancy fuel
BTW nice car

If you aren't into ultimate speed/$$ then the MSP is a nice ride and it will certainly be fun enough to drive everyday. I'd spend that kinda bread another way but then everyone has how they would spend it.
If you like it and the performance is good for you then buy it

It requires premium because all turbo'd cars require it due to the boost. If you don't put premium in, expect to lose close to 15% of the horsepower. I chose the gti 1.8t over the speed and rsx, doesn't handle as well but its built like a tank and has huge sound possibilities. Also the car is like a luxury sedan in ride, engine, interior... no kidding.

^ I think 15% is a little much. Maybe 5%, maybe.
It's more of a timing issue as mentioned.
