Morel loudspeakers
Hey - I rarely read anything about experiences with Morel speakers on this forum. A dealer here in Red Deer has picked up the line and I am going to have a listen to them soon. The dealer claims they are similar to Focal but a bit less pricey (not much less, but a bit nonetheless). Has anyone else had a chance to audition Morels? What did you think? The two sets of speakers in my price range are the Dotechs and the Dotechs ($500) and the Ovations ($900).

I'm running Morel now...older stuff though. Love them.
Except for the Morel-made PG Elites, I haven't auditioned the newer lines.
My bet is that newer stuff hasn't changed that much. With that assumption, I don't think they'd sound too similar to the Focal lines.
I love them both, but they really have different sonic characters.

They are totally different from the Focals, and better in most respects IMO.
The Ovations are awesome and worth every penny, probably 90% of the Elate performance for 60% of the cost.
The Dotechs were pretty nice, but I think that the Ovations are a lot better.

Agreed
In my opinion, Morel doesn't sound anything like Focal (thank G_D). I feel they are smoother, and much more pleasant to listen to, without listener's fatigue.
I think the two brands are worlds apart in construction, and sound quality.
Personally speaking, I'd take ANY set of Morel speakers over MOST any speaker out there.
I was more than overwhelmed when I audtioned their Home Speakers, the car speakers are just as awe inspiring.
Definetly a wise choice with Morel.

As much as I love Morel drivers, with some tuning Focals can sound amazing too.
Yes...out of the box, Focal tweeters are pretty hot. In my experience the problem has been the passives that come with the set. Eliminating them totally and going active IMO does wonders for Focals.
In terms of tweeters, no question I prefer the higher end Morel units...especially their large format tweeters. But I think Focal overall make better midrange and midbass drivers.

morels are pretty nice, they are definatley in my plan for the next system i'm working on. biggest difference between morel an focal is that morel uses massive voicecoils compared to the pinner coils in focals and due to that they can handle power a little better an its a lil harder to kill them compared to other drivers with smaller coils. the morels that i have heard have all sounded pretty deadly. however i have also heard focal setups that are equally impressive. best bet is go take a listen, you'll be impressed with either of them.

Hey
I used some of the older tweets and 4" mids about 10 years ago and they were fantastic. Smooth sound (for the mids) in a small sealed enclosure in the dash, the tweets sounded smooth but were hard to mount because of the 3" or so depth. I found an active XO worked better than the passive's I had built, individual level control was the biggest reason as the tweets needed to be attenuated about 2dB. Wish I hadn't a sold'm.
