Need new gear

I just bought a 2004 Honda Civic SI; and I am looking to upgrade the system a little (hopefully). I find there is not enough volume for me. I am looking to add some speakers that will hopefully fix my problem. Can anyone suggest what I should be looking for, and if speakers are the answer. I would like to spend around $400.00 (hopefully enough for decent sound). Any advise would be appreciated Thanks in advance Scott

Scott, new speakers may change the way it sounds and make it marginally louder, but from from much louder. In order to increase perceived loudness, a subwoofer system is in order. $400.00 is going to buy you a fairly entry level sub system comprising of a amp, sub, box and wire kit. Count on another $60-80 for install on top of that and if you want it to interface with the factory system properly, more $ again. The amp has a basic interface in it to get you started for now. In order to make things much louder in the front and rear speaker department, new speakers and an amplifier to drive them are in order. $400.00 is going to buy you some pretty budget low end garbage, so save your money for now until it is built up to the point that the investment is worthwhile doing.

Aftermarket speakers are typically less efficent than stock so the quality of sound may go up but the quantity may go down. I'd look at adding a better set of speakers and an amplifier for better quality and quantity. If you're using the factory head unit, you'll want an amplifier that has high level input or get a good high to low level adapter for the amp. When it comes to the speakers, listen to what sounds best to you. There is no perfect speaker, it's the one you like the best. A subwoofer will increase the bass but won't help the front end. If bass is what you're lacking, get a sub, if it's the mid and high end, get some new speakers and an amp to drive them.
