Need opinion on sub transaction where the buyer seems to have fried them

Obviously the amplifier produced DC current and fried the voice coil. Whenever a cone goes all the way out or all the way in, that means DC current. If you remove the coil from the woofer and inspect it you should see the top half of the coil turned black, and the bottom half should be normal. Thats because the top half of the coil was out of the air gap and was no longer being cooled by the motor assembly.
At any rate the amplifier was pushed beyond its limits and produced DC current.

I am wondering if the amp didn't bust as well.
I of course measured my coils after I wired them, they were 4ohms (3.xx). Of course I didn't measure them again after taking them out of my car.
He also said a wire caught fire! Holly crap! I have never had stuff like that happen to me heh.

Lee... it's not you man. I know you feel bad but I also know you take good care of your stuff and would NEVER sell garbage to someone.
Like others have said.. if a shop hooked it up after realizing that the final load didn't come up right then they're clearly idiots.
Do you know which shop he went to?
If you're going to meet him again let me know when it is, maybe I'll join you to take a peek.
Like others have said though.. sub coming all the way out and staying there generally means over excursion and the coil gets stuck in the gap.
This will not be caused because you've fried the coil or damaged the sub. (probably harder to do with a damaged sub!) ... He pushed the sub too far and screwed it up

like some have said:
1. shop is stupid for hooking it up AFTER seeing an issue with coils.........like who does that?
2. a sub coming all the way out can only be caused by the signal. like Jordy said, a sub that is already broken would never do this
again, i will go back to my point of them wiring it wrong. they probably took subs out of the box and put them back in incorrectly. 4 coils can be confusing, til this day i am surprized how many "installers" take their best guess on how to wire subs with multiple coils.
i have had a similar scenario happen to me a while back when I took a box with three dual coil subs to futureshop. the "installer" there removed the subs out of the box then put them back in and wired the 6 coils incorrectly and told me "oh, one of your subs is blow". seemed strange as nothing was blown prior, i took that "blown" sub out and ofcourse the idiot wired it all wrong.
