Question Need a sub - opinions greatly appreciated

hey guys,

i have a 3 series bmw, with the upgraded harmon kardon system. it sounds ok, and at the moment, all i want to do is add a sub to the trunk. down the road, i may replace the speakers, but i don't think i can convince myself to replace the headunit. i know this is where i will get the most gains, but i really don't like the look of aftermarket headunits..

anyway. i have a jl 500/1 amp, and am looking for a sub for the trunk. i listen to quite a bit of bass heavy music (ie. drum & bass, hip-hop etc) but i am looking for more sq than spl.

i have only really been looking at jl audio, as i have heard a lot of good things about them and a friend has had great luck with the products as well. i also think i want a sealed box as i am looking for tighter bass and don't want to give up a too much trunk space.

i also think i am going to try and save some $ and go the used route as opposed to new. i would rather get a better used sub than an ok new one.. i have seen quite a few of the following for sale:
2 x 10w3 in a box
10w6 - too small?
12w3 - ?
12w6 - this is what i think would suit me the best?
12w7 ? -i have seen a lot of used 12w7's but i think this might be more than i need?

i have fold down rear seats with the ski pass, and have been told that the bmw trunks are pretty soundproof, so getting a larger sub is generally advised.

would getting a w6 or w7 be overkill?

any thoughts from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

Can't go wrong with either the W6 or W7 series subs. 500w will be enough to rattle your car with a ported box built to spec for the sub.
I have the 10" w6v2 and 500/1 amp in a ported box and love it. Only turn it up to full volume for demo purposes, never while driving as its too much.

i don't think i will be anywhere near full volume either. the rest of my components wouldn't be able to handle it, and i don't want to wreck my hearing anymore than i already have

Check my sig for what i'm running now.
I've also used 1 and 2 w6v2 12's on a 500/1. Sounded great.
The w7'8's on a 500/1 also sound great. Do not under estimate the output of these subs. For sq subs these things thunder.

sq spl sub

I would strongly suggest an Image Dynamics IDMax12 which is equivalent to between W6 and W7 and about half the price as well. We have this sub in stock and available for demo if you're interested. You may contact us at 647-435-5980 to find out somemore information.

I don't think this is what you are after but I'll throw it out there......maybe take a look at getting a pair of Elemental Designs SQ10's, would be a perfect match for your amp and in a sealed box would use less room than a single 12w6v2. It's a slim sub with 9.3mm xmax, it got a good review in the Performance Auto&Sound 2007 annual buyers guide.

thanks for the responses! keep them coming.

i'm a noob at this stuff, so more or less reliant on known brand names (ie jl) and word of mouth.

what would you guys think of a id 12qv2 in a 1.25 cu ft ported box?
ie. the 'normal' specs here
http://www./spec.php?type=encspec&id=IDQ12D4%20V.2

i have also heard good things abt the edq subs, will have to look into further.

alright guys, i think i am leaning more towards an id system. based on my setup/requirements, what do you think would you think would work better?

an idq12 d4 v2 in a 'normal' (1.25 cu ft) ported box
or an idmax 12d4v2 in a 'small' (1 cu ft) sealed box - for abt $150 more
