New to Forum: Looking for Recommendations

Hi there,

I'm new to the forum, and hail from Milton, Ontario. It's nice to find a home-grown audio site.

Some info about me; I've always been a car audio nut. My first systems were built in the early 90's. Fast forward past the 'married with kids' part to today; now I'm the recent new owner of a 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder. A fun commuter car. Since I've been out of the game so long, I'llooking for some recommendations on gear for my spyder. I have the following already, but I'm not sure about some stuff, like XO, EQ and sub.

I'm looking for a loud/clear setup, but am very short on space. I'd still like to get a set of golf clubs into the trunk when all is said and done.

This is what I've got so far specifically for the car:

Pioneer deck that came with the car - will likely keep this until the budget allows for something better.
SoundStream 830w 5-channel amp
Image Dynamics CD-1E horns

I also have this gear that I've acquired over the years, some of which was installed in the spyder when I got it:

PG 1x1400w monoblock
PG 2x 50w amp
Alpine 1x100w amp
Blaupunkt 400w amp (came w/ car)
Infinity 1230w 12" sub
Rockford 12" sub (like the ones from BestBuy; came w/ car, and is in a really crappy box)

So basically I'm looking to buy:

Image Dynamics CX62 speakers for the doors to go with the horns
Image Dynamics IDQ12 dual 4-ohm sub

Not sure if I can run all this off of the SoundStream, or if I should use the PG monoblock to drive the sub. I'm hoping I can get away with one amp, due to space constraints. Also, XO and EQ are a big question for me too; was thinking AudioControl for these, but not really sure if there's anything better that I should be looking at. I'm also concerned about the space an IDQ12 will take up...top-down driving is going to take all the low end out, so I need something that's going to move air with a teeny box.

Thanks for the responses, guys.

Was surfing the FS/T forum; found this thread:

Seller is selling a DIYMA sub; would this pair nicely with the ID horns and midbasses?

Welcome!
yeah Sasha's post. he has some great gear for sale cheap.
if you want loud and clean in a small space give him a buzz he def has something that will work for ya.
there's also some CDT stuff for sale there from two dif sellers. both have great gear, also loud and clean.
i would try a custom built box for the subs you already have first. save some money. a good box with a cheap sub will sound way better than a good sub in a crappy one!
you could also sell what you dont want and use that money to buy.. you have some options here for sure.
as for the amp powering everything, im not sure. you did not post the model of that amp. is 830watts rms or peak?

I like the P2 series from Rockford. I ran a 10" version for space reasons. Mine is a SVC (4 Ohm) but newer versions were DVC. If yours is the latter version, I would use the Soundstream with the sub wired at 2 Ohm and in a well built enclosure. If not, the P2 is going to want more than 180w. I would use your Blaupunkt amp for the sub, as I think the PG amp would promptly cook the P2. This setup would save you some dough, and if you grab the front stage you're looking at, it should sound sound killer. Maybe sink some cash into the deck instead of a higher powered sub... I think the most popular deck around here is the Eclipse 5030

Thanks for the help. I'm beginning to think I'll use the SS for the front stage only, and find something else for the sub. Being convertible, I don't think 270w is going to give me what I'm looking for with the top down. I'm thinking I'll use the front outputs for the horns, the rear outputs for the midbasses, and then find either a driver that'll handle the spanking from the PG Xenon, or an amp to appropriately power the P2. I'll pull the sub tonight to see if it's DVC or not.

The "system" in there right now sounds like complete crap. The car needs deadening BAD as it's rattling like CRAZY, especially in the back seat. Just waiting for the weather to warm up to get the fatmat installed. The guy who put the system in was a college kid who didn't know anything about car audio. I should take a pic of the "install" and post it for some laughs.

LOL sounds good. I was thinking of box size more than anything... Running 1200WRMS is going to require a box that may end up dominating your trunk. I ran my P2 in a sealed enclosure and it was solid for low end reinforcement. I also only ran 400WRMS to it. No big thumps, just clear sound. For you, that 12" in a sealed enclosure may be just enough. Ported will be louder, just not sure if it's going to take up too much space.
