hey guys. here's a newb question.. i am currently unhappy with the frequency response of my sub and enclosure. I have a Pioneer Premier TS-W2000SPL tuned to 30Hz powered by a Kenwood eXcelon KAC-X810D. now.. the bass frequency or "LPF FREQUENCY (Hz)" setting ranges from 50Hz to 200Hz. I have it set almost to the bottom 50Hz, the higher bass is lacking but when i turn this setting up too much i get vocals coming through my sub.

What I am wondering is what do you guys thing a good setting for this would be? and if it is something i have to set myself (because i understand all sub/amp setups are different) then what would be a good track that i could use to set this?
thanks for any replies.. my old subs sounded good with the control set to around 55-60Hz, but if i dont like how my new one sounds then should i be turning the LPF up higher?
Thanks!

You forgot to mention what other speakers you are using. There's more to a system than just a sub!!lol If you're really not happy with the bass perhaps it's the enclosure!? is it built to specs? Generally, The lpf should be no higher than 80hz.I

i have a rockford Fanatic X component set (not currently amped) with 6.5 mids and silk dome tweets and rockford crossovers, and 6x9s in the rear. i was liking the sound from the rest of the system even without amping the comp's (for the time being) but the upper bass ranges from the sub were lacking. i know it's by far not a SQ sub by any means, but i have heard them sound better in other systems. i guess basically i am trying to make the subs pick up where the mids leave off if that's possible lol. anyway i am going to try different places to set the LPF.. so no higher than 80Hz eh? yeah im gonna see what happens with it tomorrow.

I have my crappy deck in now, when i get my project vehicle on the road my eXcelon is getting installed. maybe i can fine-tune everything a bit better with that once i set the amp where i want it. thanks for the reply!

Not 100% sure but I think the Kenwood has a 12dB/Oct crossover. If your deck has a sub out, try setting the crossover on it as well, and the two slpoes add up to 24dB or thereabouts.
If not, then matbe a set of F-Mod low pass filters, or a better outboard crossover would steepen the slope up.

cool. yeah the x979 is finally getting installed (had it since christmas) but the sunroof leaks in my current car.. i have a '94 z24 i am working on, everything is going in there. im sure that deck has ALOT more options than my pioneer premier DEH-240F (by reading the book anyways). thanks for the replies!

Love those Excelon decks...

The System 'Q' tuning functions in the deck are more sophisticated than a simple LPF....you can try leaving the X-over on the amp off, and use the deck to tune up the sub first, see how that works and sounds, and then think about using the filter on the amp.

If you are running the coax's off the deck, there are several ways to tune them thru the deck functions as well..

Sounds like you're going to be in the market for a 4channel amp soon. One of the things I like about the Excelon decks is the built-in amp mute function. When you do get the new amp, make sure when you go through the set-up process that you turn that feature on, as it makes a substantial difference in the power output thru the RCA's.

Sounds like a nice system coming together....

Just my $.02 worth....

ahh eventually it will be a decent system.. i got the sub sounding pretty good, just played around with the LPF a bit. the SQ is not so bad (for an SPL sub). but i cannot wait to get the deck in. it is a 2004 model (KDC-X979) so its last year's but just the same it should do the trick for what I am looking for out of a deck for at least a few years. a 4ch amp would be pretty mint.. maybe this time next year i might have some $ to shell out for one. if I was to add a 4ch amp, what would be the best. maybe amp the components and 6x9s off it? and if i was to do that, would i be able to run another set of speakers off the deck.. or would that mess with the front stage too much?

thank you for the compliment.. the components are from around 2001, but i never beat them.. and i havent heard any comp's in that price range that i liked better (jsut my opinion.. everyone's ears are different right, and everyone has their own sound preferences). but yea, it is uhh.. in progress probably always will be too, i'm always changing something heh.

only thing is.. i ported the back of the box, didn't know about the 90 degrees from the port rule.. i will probably go slot-ported in the future instead. u guys think if i stapled some poly-fill in the box it would give me better low-end respoonse? it is a 1.6cu/ft box ported to 30hz...

I'd stick with the comps and the 6X9s for now, once you get an amp on them, they will sound better than they do now. Once you have them dialled in, you may find you don't need any more speakers up front.

As for the box, the fill might help, better would be to build a new one with the port on the same side as the driver.

HTH

would that be ok though.. i drive a '94 Cavalier, i have the fold-down seats but alot of us with Cavaliers find that the subs sound alot better with the cone firing toward the back of the car. so if i fired the cone toward the back of the car and ported the same side of the box that the driver is on.. the port would fire toward the back of the car. is that ok? will i lose any SQ by doing this.. or even drop SPL? or would it actually be better all around? i assume it is "slot port" you are talking about?
thanks!
