Ok.. well I am a car audio virgin. I been doing a bit of looking around (just checking out products on some manufacturers websites.. primarily Panasonic for decks, and Alpine for amps & speakers).

I have a 1991 Hyundai Excel 2-door hatchback. Im not trying to pimp it out as that would be pathetic, but Im a music lover so I want some quality sound.

I want to go with a Panasonic MP3 deck (havent decided on the model yet, but the "ghost" face plate models look like something I would want).

My goal is for a high clarity system. At the moment Im not terribly worries about subs, although I will eventually get some to round out my stereo.

My questions mainly are where to put WHAT type of speakers.

I have two stock spaces on the top of the dash, on both far ends. I havent took off the grills and checked what size od speakers I could get in there, but maybe you guys would know an average size that is used.

This is my idea:

two 3-1/2" coaxials in the dash
5-1/4" coaxials on either front doors (near the bottom)
two 6"x9" coaxials in the back, on-top/behind the back seet **OR two 6-1/2"coaxials**

Now... as far as amps go I am friggin lost. what should I look for to provide adaquet power to all those speakers (or something similiar that may be a better choice) and in the future maybe 2 10" subs. should I go with 2 different amps, or can I get away with using a single amp?

see I am lost because I still dont uderstand the whole channel's & bridging and crossover stuff yet.

And could I power some of those speakers properly using the built in amp that will come with the deck (usualy 4X50W)?

I just need some suggestions & help to show me the light.

thanks,
Dan

This is what I would do. Buy a two channel amp ranging from 50 to 200 watts and mount a pair of good to excellent 6.5 components low in the doors or make some kick panels. You will be very suprised at how well a good component set performs by themselves. Years ago when I competed in Iasca, I used to turn my sub amp off when in the SQ lanes, as far as being able to hear the difference, there was'nt much, but it gave more control over my final RTA reading.

what about for the back? I would want some sound for the back...

would 6x9's be a good choice? Could I run some 6x9's off of my deck with enough power? or could I run the components off my deck with enough power?

and as far as "good to excellent", what are some good sets? Are infinity Kappa component sets any good?

So in summary I am asking with using the setup you explained, how can I incorporate some deeper sounding speakers in the rear... like 6x9's ? Oh and in the dash, the stock speakers are 4" round. So I wanna use that space up If I can.

So that means speakers in the doors, and the dash. And if possible above the rear seats. Will I be able to power all those with an amp that has similiar specs as you mentioned?

Im guessing something like this:

2 - 4" mids (in the dash) (coaxial maybe)
2 - 5-1/4" component set (door)
2 - 6x9's (above rear seat) (coaxials)

Like I the post says, I am a newbie. But would a 4" component set in the dash, with 5-1/4" coaxials in the door sound better?

what gives deeper bass... 6-1/2" or 6"x9"s ? and would it be beneficial to have the rear speakers components, or coaxials.. or just straight mids?

thanks

I would keep it as simple as possible.

-Deck

-Amplifier

-6.5" component set in the front

Ignore the rear, don't even think about a sub until after you've heard the above installed.

Of the 3 listed above, put the most money you can into the speakers. Don't look at power handling numbers as judgement of quality.

Use your ears. Ask to listen to as many speakers as you can. Pick what you like, not what the salesman has on special.

I have a 6.5" 3 way component set in my car, and with the subwoofers turned OFF, people ask if the sub is ON!

Enjoy the music,

Adam

ok.. I will try that then.

Should I get an amp to run the components.. or just use the decks on-board power?

And what are 3-ways? is that a coxial mid, with a seperate tweeter?

thanks

yes power the components off a amp, a AB class amp.

3 way I belive in these terms is discribing a 3 set of speaker run off of 1 passive crossover, (there all components) most common 3 ways include a 6"/4"/1"tweeter on each side.

3 way can include 8" as well instead of the 6" for your doors.

get a nice clean sounding headunit- cheap is not good here.
look for somthing with 4V output.

good luck
