Opinions on Nak headunits?
Hey all
Like the title says, does anyone have opinions on the sound quality and life expectancy of these. Specifically the CD-500 or CD-700II. Comparison to Clarion DRZ9255, Denonford 8250 or Alpine 7909? No one around here sells them anymore that I'm aware of so I can't go listen to them.
Thanks, J

I have the CD400, SQ is awesome, reliability is 95%, have had mine for almost 2 years and no problems with breakdowns.
This unit is a bit picky about reading certain types of disks though, but other than that, love it.
If I was to replace it, it would be the CD700 or an Eclipse CD5000 or 7000.

Nakamichi HU's
Although its not any of the ones you have listed, I have a CD-40z for the past three years. It has held up reliably, I like the plain look, and the high pre out voltage.
It is picky about cd-r's and works best with the black memorex cd-r's.

good looking units, break more than other good brands, finicky about burned discs, and sound great when working. I would never buy one as reliability is paramount in my mind...what good is performance if it's at the repair shop?

Also these HU's are the awsome sounding and I have not seen many issues with break downs.

Over the last 10 years I think they have had at least 3, if not 4, distributors and there were a number of years with no distributor at all.
Don't get me wrong - I sold (or tried to sell) Nak for a number of years and I really liked their products. No way I would run one though, just to unreliable and finicky. We ran 60%+ failure rates on headunits. That's heavy.

Ya I understand what your saying. Things should change now since they have been with this distributor for 2-3 years now and it should continue to grow again. And I know they have no plans of dropping the line. As for the reliablity I know that has been addressed and are becoming more so. So hopefully nothing but good things from here on in.

Hey
Thanks for the replies, I used to have a TP1200 back in the day and it was in for repair twice under warranty totalling ~6 months. I was just hoping that things had changed as it did sound fantastic with my ghetto setup. No immediate plans to buy another HU in the next 6 months but I am looking at different models.
I don't usually play burnt discs so that wouldn't be a problem, maybe 1 out of 100 is burnt because the original is too expensive.
Thanks, J
