Opinions on over powering subs
#11
there is no straight answer to this
you can always over power by a bit, all depends on the quality of the signal and quality of the speaker. it's all in how you do it, what you are doing it with and what you are doing it to.

See i went from my infinity 12 in my blazer and i could pound the guts out of it with the same amp for hours and hours. No clipping, no burnt voice coils just super clean bass.
I put the complete same setup in my 1/2 ton and it cooked the sub in about 4 sessions of 15 minutes and only 2 minutes of real pounding. The infinity was rated for 300watts rms and 1200peak and is indestructable with my alpine amp. The lanzar was 400w rms but only 800 peak and died in minutes

Well the version i bought was definitly cheap. My point was its for me to ignor that peak power rating now. Cause like you said the infinity is better and it said so right on the box.
I appreciate your answers and help. But peak power seems to be saying "dumping more power then "x" with burn this up, so warned. Because when the lanzar burn i was pushing it hard, less hard the the infinity. And that exactly what the peak power rating says.
So i cant see how its a pointless number. Kinda like a redline on your car. Most people never hit hit so they can ignore the number. But if your constantly gonna bounce it into that zome maybe its not the right sub for your/ my purposes.
Thanks again

Believe me i noticed... I have a clarion WQ2510D that should be here thursday
But i've gutted it down to the motor, and might use it to try a build, Ive been talking to the guys at Fixyourspeaker and they said They could assemble me a upgraded recone with a stiffer spider 700 watt dvc.
if it works out, i might use custom subs for my blazer next year...
Again thanks for the help.

now.. if it was the lanzar OPTI line thats a different story
ive over powered every sub i have owned and never had a problem with cooking them.. i did blow one, but it was mechanical problems/defects that caused it
keep power clean and you should have no problem, to a certain point

As much as it pains me to say Infinity is better than something, I would say it is definately the better quality of the 2. This would explain how it outlasted the Lanzar which is just cheap ebay / flea market crap. I have had a set of components in my car running at almost 3 TIMES rated power. They are 80 wrms and are getting an underated 230rms each. No issues whatsoever with them, however I know what signs to look, listen, and smell for.
