So I went camping last weekend again used my truck as our stereo all weekend cuz we forgot the radio.

Battery died a couple times ...no big deal. just boosted it with the other car.

obviously had to reset the time and the stations after the weekend cuz the battery died... again no big deal.

all week ....maybe it was my imagination but it seemed the display has been dimming off and on ...didn't really think about it.

This morning I come out to go to work and turn on my truck and there is no display.

Radio works no problem ...but display is toast.

I have warranty ...just hoping warranty will cover it.

Any ideas what might have happened?

Ya so to follow up...

I went into Futureshop where I bought the deck last year.

Asked them what could be done.

they said we'll take it out of your truck and send it off to get repaired which could take 6 to 8 weeks.

I said "are u crazy ...I paid a bunch extra for the extended warranty and now I bring it in to make use of that warranty and you tell me the extra money I paid for the 'futureshop extended warranty' does exactly what the manufacturers warranty would have done"

What was the point.

So I'm still gonna be without a deck for 6 to 8 weeks now.

Unless I put in a crappy old tape deck I have lying around ...but thats not really the point now is it.

4 trips into the service bay?

That's crazy!!

If one trip into the service bay to have it removed can take 6 to 8 weeks to get it back and I have to do that 4 times before I have it replaced I could be drivin around for upwards of 2 months at a time times 4 times = 8 months of no stereo before they decide to replace it.

By then my warranty will be expired anyways and I'll still be sheeeeet outta luck.

Kills me that last year just before I got this deck the reason I got this deck is because the DEH-P4500 I bought initially failed to play/read mp3's so I took it back and they said well we can either send it off to get fixed or you can pay the extra money and upgrade to the 5500 ...I didn't want to wait so I upgraded ...this time the guy said that isn't futureshop policy and he doesn't know why a manager allowed me to do that last time.

anyways ...just frustrated bout the hassles of electronics and warranties.

/end rant

Don't get me wrong Derek.

Futureshops Customer Service is usually very good.

And once they explained to me why they had to do what they had do and what there policies were I was a little more understanding.

Still doesn't make the hole in my dash any less frustrating.

yep...better than buying a new one. You can always take it right to a local service center to shave some time off the repair.

At least the lemon rule will eventually replace your HU. As far as the manufacturer is concerned they will fix your deck as many times as it takes until your factory warranty expires. It doesn't matter if the deck has been out of your vehicle longer than it's been in.

Most electronics stores offer an extended warranty which covers the same things the factory did but for a longer time. I think it's awesome to have that peace of mind.

Most stores won't do an exchange because it is (at that point) unknown what caused the defect. Maybe it was liquid damage, physical damage, incorrect installation and when it goes to the service depot and it is deemed abuse or a non-warrantied defect, then the retailler is on the hook for the bill since they have already replaced that unit for the client with a new product. Usually at that time it is too late to get the unit back from the customer and pursuing payment for the non-warranted repair is not cost effective and usually exhausting.

Too many consumers consider the retailler as the "nameless-faceless organization" that has too much money and should eat the cost to make said consumer happy. Imagine if it was your own company and the 1 product you have to swallow for a client eats up the profit from the last 10 units you sold. A $200 deck doesn't put $200 in the retaillers pocket......more like $25 after paying for the cost of the unit, the salespersons commision or salary, the shipping of the unit to the store, overhead and still paying yourself.

It's just my perspective since I am in the industry and have my own small business on the side.

It's hard since I try not to be biased but can not truly be neutral. I am sure a non-retail oriented person would have a different outlook. Yes or no?

To bad car audio didn't work like like computers where most of the stuff is all adavanced exchanges, you have a problem? No prob we will send you replacement ship yours back anda way ya go 3-5 business days.... would save the headache.. Fs is horrible for that.. they tell our customers oh yeah 4-6 weeks easy!, why cause FS sends it to there warehouse or waits to get a few of products in to save on shipping mean while if they just called HP to begin with most of the time 3-5 bus days and ur ready to go.
