I have some questions related to this subject.

When people talk about a Nintendo 64-bit game system as opposed to a 128-bit system, it’s pretty obvious that a 128-bit system is way better. More information in a set of instructions - instead of a single instruction made up of 64 bits, one instruction now holds 128 bits.

According to the on-line dictionaries,

a bit is the smallest unit of measure in the digital realm - either a one or a zero.

a byte is a digital “word” made up of 8 bits.

a bitstream is a continuous stream of data.

Only one on-line dictionary stated that a byte can be more than the conventional 8 bits. So, in a 128-bit system, is a single byte made up of 128 bits?

Back to the D/A converter discussion.

Although most recordings are done in 16 bit resolution, it’s not the amount of info that is in the recording, but how much processing is put into the converting process, right?

I would love to find out more. On second thought, maybe not. I’ll just enjoy listening to DVD-Audio recordings on my F#1 Status equipment and save the mumble jumble for those who get paid to work on that kind of stuff.

I can remember when CD Players came out, most people did not like them because they claimed that the Music sounded "colored". When you go from listening to music from a record player to tape to CD you will all agree that the sound is very "different" not necessarily better. Some people will claim that a CD does not have the "warm" sound as a Record does or live. I have had arguments that "digital" sounds great but again this is always in the "ears of the beholder". Remember, recorded music is always eq'ed.

Funny thought, most people now come in and want to spend money for "good" sound but always seem to have a MP3 Player somewhere. Ipods are now more and more used in most cars and think about it.....FM Mods are coming back now that MP3s and Sat Radio are breaking through. I am a firm believer in Source, Wiring, Amplification, and SPEAKERS!!!!.

My advise is simple and I agree with Rob..... LISTEN to both units and make your own mind up, only you can tell us what "sounds" good to YOU!!

I have always used Pioneer in the past and will continue to do so for the reasons that they sound great (to me) and I have never, NEVER had an issue with them not working properly.

since most people can't tell the difference between high bit rate mp3's and the original( myself included), do you think they would be able to tell the difference between 1 bit and multi bit processing, all other things being equal?

I agree for the most part; however, jitter has more to do with the clock from the transport not being in alignment with the clock from the D/A -- mostly from the old days of using outboard D/A converters.

Crystal makes a good D/A chip. Also any HDCD CD player has to use the Pacific Microsonics D/A, which improves the sound of any CD.

Burr Brown "was" the shiznit back in the day, but as mentioned earlier in this post, you have to wonder when the name pops up on every brand which ones are "really" the genuine article.

I may be a bit late on this topic, but I definitely noticed a difference when I switched from 1 bit to 24. Furthermore, even my wife notices a difference when playing CDs on our DVD player (24-bit audio DACs) as opposed to our 1-bit CD changer. And she doesn't even know what a DAC is. I think that's pretty close to a double-blind listening test...my wife is very skeptical about all this audio mumbo jumbo...

And Haunz; why all caps, no stems? Stems are where it's really at...especially when they're all fuzzy inside...

Some of the early DAC might have been pretty crappy with noticable clock jitter.... but these days they are all pretty good... That aside, I still hold the opinion that no one can hear the difference between a quality 1bit and a quality 24bit in a ABX listening test.....

Unless thats how the test was setup, it isn't valid IMO....
